Summary
This lighthearted comedy explores the importance of effective witnessing. A group of young Christians—each with their own quirks—attempts to evangelize, but their method relies on scripted scare tactics instead of genuine faith. Their dramatic warnings about judgment and hell fail to inspire, leading to awkward and ineffective interactions. When they encounter a wise voice (a policeman or authority figure), they are challenged to rethink their approach.
The voice advises them to pray, seek Jesus, and let their witness be one of love, grace, and mercy rather than fear. Realizing their mistake, the group decides to first connect with Christ before going out again, learning that true witnessing comes from the heart and not just rehearsed words.
Run-Time: 6 -8 minutes
Biblical References and Themes
-
Matthew 28:19-20 – "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
- Connection: Witnessing is a command, but it must be done with wisdom, love, and guidance from the Holy Spirit.
-
1 Peter 3:15 – "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
- Connection: Witnessing should be done with gentleness and respect, not as a fear-driven message.
Characters & Descriptions
- Brittney – A ditsy, overly enthusiastic blonde. Excitable but not very thoughtful.
- Matt – A major jock, more interested in sports and competition than evangelism.
- Steven – The most “normal” of the group, but still lacking in witnessing skills.
- Allison – A know-it-all who tends to correct everyone else.
- Voice – A wise, authoritative figure (can be played by an actor or voice-over).
Scene 1
(Brittney and Steven enter together from stage left or from the back of the sanctuary.)
Steven (flat, emotionless):
O.K. You know what to do, right?
Brittney (cheerfully):
Like, duh!
(They walk up to an imaginary door. Steven knocks. The "door" opens.)
Brittney (yells loudly, speaking very quickly):
Would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies?!
Steven (shocked):
What?! No!
(Clears his throat, then speaks in a monotone, overly deliberate voice.)
Steven:
Repent, for the day of judgment is near. Go to church, you evildoer. Turn from your wicked ways, or you are condemned to the eternal flames of Hell.
(Turns and walks away without emotion.)
Brittney (grinning):
Have a nice day!!
(Skips away, exiting stage right.)
Scene 2
(Allison and Matt enter from stage left.)
Matt (as though warming up for a race):
O.K. Allison, let’s race to that house right over there!
Allison (rolling her eyes):
O.K., Matt! Let’s go!
(They crouch down into a race-starting position.)
Allison (excitedly):
Ready! Set! Go!!
(Matt takes off running at full speed, but Allison simply stands up and casually walks toward the house.)
Matt (stopping, frustrated):
That wasn’t funny!
Allison (mocking):
O.K., here we go again!
(Pretends to knock on a door. As the "door" opens, she speaks very fast, without pausing.)
Allison (rushing her words):
Repent, for the Day of Judgment is near. Go to church, you evildoer. Turn from your wicked ways, or you are condemned to the eternal flames of Hell!
(Takes a deep breath.)
(Throughout Allison’s speech, Matt’s expression shifts—he becomes increasingly worried, as though he is hearing these words for the first time and is actually being witnessed to.)
Matt (panicked, eyes wide):
This can’t be true! What do we do?!
(Bursts into tears, turns to Allison, almost shouting.)
Matt (dramatic, pleading):
Allison, save us! We won’t do it anymore! We promise!
(The "door" slams shut. Allison glares at Matt, frustrated.)
