Written by John Rocklen
Two Dresses is a contemporary Christian drama set in the quiet hours between night and morning. After a painful night of rejection, disappointment, and betrayal, Maya sits alone on an apartment stairwell convinced that her worth has been measured and found lacking.
When Catherine, a warm and compassionate woman on her way to church, stops to sit beside her, an unexpected conversation begins. As two very different lives intersect, Maya is challenged to see herself through a different lens and to reconsider what truly defines beauty, identity, friendship, and belonging.
Set at the fragile moment when darkness gives way to dawn, Two Dresses is an intimate story of compassion, dignity, forgiveness, and hope. Through a simple act of kindness and a heartfelt conversation between two strangers, the play explores the life-changing truth that our value is not determined by appearance, rejection, or the opinions of others, but by the unconditional love and grace of God.
Run-Time: Approximately 15–18 minutes
Cast: 2 females
- Maya – A young woman in her twenties, emotionally vulnerable and struggling with her self-worth.
- Catherine – A woman in her forties to sixties, warm, compassionate, patient, and grounded in her Christian faith.
Bible Reference: Psalm 30:5
Additional Scripture Themes: 1 Samuel 16:7; Psalm 139:14; 1 Peter 3:3–4; Galatians 6:2
Set: A simple apartment building stairwell or entrance with steps. The scene takes place in the early morning hours, transitioning from darkness to dawn. Minimal staging is required.
Props: Cell phone, handbag, tissues.
Costumes:
- Maya – Dark blue cocktail dress.
- Catherine – Cream or off-white dress with colorful embroidery, suitable for church.
Lighting: Soft nighttime lighting gradually transitions into the warm glow of sunrise.
Themes: Inner beauty, self-worth, God's unconditional love, compassion, friendship, encouragement, Christian kindness, and faith.
Performance Suggestions: Women's ministry events, Sunday worship services, church drama presentations, and Christian gatherings.
Special Considerations: This is a dialogue-driven drama requiring two actresses comfortable portraying genuine emotion. Catherine should be played with warmth and humility rather than as preachy or judgmental. The emotional connection between the women is central to the performance.

CHARACTERS
MAYA
A woman in her twenties.
CATHERINE
A woman forty to sixty. She is extremely personable and radiates gentle warmth and kindness. Her demeanor is unhurried, thoughtful and deliberate.
SCENE
The stairwell of an apartment building on a city side street dimly lit with a blend of tired gold and cold white street and building lighting. It is the time of day when the very late night and very early morning converge and are the same- when someone ending a long Saturday night might cross paths with someone just setting out on their day very early on a Sunday morning.
SAMPLE
(MAYA, wearing a deep blue low-cut, form-fitting cocktail or club dress that she will adjust throughout, sits center on the steps. She is holding her phone, sobbing, wiping tears with her fingers . A few moments later CATHERINE, carrying a handbag, wearing an off-white or cream-colored dress with a multicolored embroidery pattern, opens the door at the top of the stairs. MAYA becomes aware that she is blocking CATHERINE'S descent.)
MAYA
(rising and moving to one side)
Oh. I'm sorry.
CATHERINE
(smiles warmly)
No worries, dear. You're fine.
(CATHERINE descends the stairs, turns and takes a few steps on the sidewalk.)
MAYA
(as if calling CATHERINE back)
I love your dress.
CATHERINE
(turns back, delightedly)
You do? Well aren't you kind.
MAYA
I do. It's beautiful.
CATHERINE
(stepping closer to MAYA)
Why thank you, dear.
MAYA
I love the colors of the embroidery- and the pattern. It’s lovely on you. I mean that.
CATHERINE
I bought this dress for a friend's daughter's Christening last spring. I'm wearing it again this morning for early Sunday church service. I just can't resist it.
MAYA
(touches CATHERINE's dress)
I love it on you. I do.
CATHERINE
Why thank you. You are very kind to say so. Are you waiting for a ride, dear?
MAYA
No. I'm waiting for my friend. She lives here.
CATHERINE
(knowingly, places her hand on MAYA's upper arm)
Is everything okay?
MAYA
Yes.
CATHERINE
Are you sure? Do you need help with something?
MAYA
No. I'm fine. I'm just waiting for my friend here- and she's late. That's all.
CATHERINE
When were you expecting her to return?
MAYA (laughs sorrowfully)
About an hour and a half ago.
CATHERINE
Oh my. Is there anything I can do for you?
MAYA
No. But thank you.
CATHERINE
What is it dear?
MAYA
Nothing. I am just having a really bad night. That's all. I'm sorry. I shouldn't be out here crying like this.
CATHERINE (sympathetically)
No. Sweetie.
MAYA
I'm okay. I’ve been up all night... and I just want to go home. That's all.
CATHERINE
Are you sure there isn't anything that I can do for you?
MAYA
No. Nothing. But thank you.
CATHERINE
(after a moment, places both of her hands on MAYA'S upper arms)
Come. Sit back down with me, dear.
MAYA
I'm okay.
CATHERINE
Please. Just come sit with me.
MAYA
I'm okay. I am.
CATHERINE
Please. Just come sit with me just for a moment.
(slowly and gently guides MAYA to the stairs)
Here. Dear. Sit.
(they both sit, then CATHERINE removes some tissues from her handbag and offers to MAYA)
Here, dear.
MAYA
(accepts the tissues and will blot tears from her eyes)
Thank you.
CATHERINE
What is your name, dear?
MAYA
Maya.
CATHERINE
I'm Catherine. Just relax, dear.
MAYA
I'm sorry. I shouldn't be out here crying. It's just that I left all of my things here in my friend's apartment. I just really need to get in and get them when she gets here and go home. I've been up all night and just want to go home. That's all.
CATHERINE
Do you know where your friend is now?
MAYA
No. I keep texting her. She texted me before and said she would be here soon- but never shows up. And she knows that I'm sitting out here waiting for her. And she won't answer any of my calls now, either.
CATHERINE
Is this what is upsetting you so like this?
MAYA
No. But yes. She does things like this to me.
CATHERINE
What is it, dear?
MAYA
Nothing.
CATHERINE
Is there something more?
MAYA
It was nothing really. (hesitating) It was something that happened at this club tonight. It's nothing.
CATHERINE
It must have been something. I want you tell me what happened tonight?
MAYA
It's nothing I should be crying about. You are nice to ask, but I ...
CATHERINE
(gently rubs MAYA's back)
Okay. Okay. We'll just sit then. We'll just sit.
MAYA
You don't have to sit here because of me. You are very nice to want to, but it's nothing that should keep you. I'll be okay.
CATHERINE
You aren't keeping me, dear. Not in the least. God gives us time for all things.
(a few moments pass)
MAYA
(takes a deep breath)
See? I went to this club tonight with my friend. We met up with a new friend of hers there that she keeps talking about. The man at the door let the both of them into the club- but not me. That's all. See? It's nothing really.
CATHERINE
Why wouldn't he let you in?
MAYA
Because only the best girls get into this club, it seems.
