This short, family-focused drama brings to life the essence of Advent through a simple yet powerful comparison: just as children must tidy up before their parents return, we too are called to prepare our hearts and lives for Christ’s coming. Featuring a family of six and a guiding Narrator, the script humorously illustrates how easily we get distracted by the “stuff” of life—especially during the busy Christmas season. Drawing on Matthew 25:14, the Narrator reminds us that Jesus’ return shouldn’t catch us off-guard. Instead, Advent is our special season to “clean up” and refocus on the true reason for Christmas: God’s gift of love and salvation. Best of all, the play offers a hopeful note that we’re never on our own—Christ is already with us, helping us to be ready for Him. With minimal set requirements and a brief run time, this thought-provoking drama is perfect for Advent services, children’s programs, or small-group gatherings.

Will our lives reflect a proper lifestyle when he returns?

Sample of script:

Father: OK, now, kids. Marie is going to be your baby-sitter tonight. I expect you to do as she tells you until we get back.

Johnny: Can I play with my toys?

Jane: Yeh, and can I play with my dolls?

Mother: Yes, children, you can play with your toys, but you must pick them all up and put them away neatly when you finish playing.

Frankie: Can I watch Jungle Jammers on TV?

Father: Yes, you may, but straighten up the room when it's finished.

Julia: I’m hungry. Can I have a snack before I go to bed?

Mother: Of course, just remember to clean up after yourself.

Mother and Father leave the stage.

Children mime playing, watching TV, reading, as narrator speaks.

Narrator: I wonder, how would these parents feel if they came back home and found toys all over the floor? Of if there were pillows and food, hats and coats all over the floor, in the living room, down the hallway, even in the parents' bedroom? Time for the baby-sitter to say, “time to pick up, clean up, your parents will be back soon!” Advent’s kind of the same way, it’s the time, the season. . .
