But this isn’t any ordinary return.

In this poignant and thought-provoking sketch, two characters wrestle with a deeper truth: What if the greatest gift ever given… can’t be exchanged, returned, or replaced?

Sample Script

[Scene: The Returns Department of a busy department store. A counter or table is set with bags and boxes. A large sign on the back wall reads: “Exchange Department – Please Take a Number.” The Clerk stands behind the counter. Shopper approaches hurriedly.]

Shopper
(approaching the counter)
Excuse me sir, this was a gift given to me. I would now like to return it, please.

Clerk
You received a gift which you now want to return?

Shopper
Yes, that is correct. And, sorry, but I am in a rush. Could I just return this gift, please?

Clerk
(smiling)
I'm sorry, but that gift is non-returnable.

Shopper
Non-returnable? But I was told that this is where the gift came from.

Clerk
(with pride)
Oh yes, that is correct! This is where that gift did indeed come from!

Shopper
Well, if you admit that the gift came from here, and since I wish to return it, I can't see what the problem is. Why are you trying to keep me from returning this gift?

Clerk
Sorry, but as I’ve told you — the gift is non-returnable.

Shopper
(raising voice)
Fine then! I will simply go to your competition. They will welcome me with open arms! They will allow me to return this gift to them!

[The Clerk simply looks at the Shopper with a look of great sorrow.]

Shopper
Can you at least tell me another location where this gift is available — where I can go and return my gift?
