The Great Divide is a short, thought-provoking drama illustrating humanity’s struggle to bridge the gap between themselves and God. Two characters, Sam and Denise, attempt various ways to cross a divide but realize that no amount of effort—good deeds, church attendance, or self-reliance—can bridge the gap. In the end, they recognize that only through Christ can the divide be crossed. The drama challenges the audience to reflect on their own spiritual journey and reliance on Jesus as the way to salvation.

Scene opens as actors enter from stage right. They approach the “wall” and stop before the gap, realizing they will not be able to get across.
Sam (looking around): What have we here?
Denise: Well, it looks like this could be a challenge! And we are so close!
Sam: How are we going to get to the other side?
Denise: I suppose we should weigh our options. I mean, we could take a running leap across!
Sam (hesitant, looking down at the floor): Yeah, but that’s a pretty long drop if we miss. If we don’t make it, what then?
Denise: Maybe you’re right. Well, then how about laying a really long ladder across and walking right over the gap?
Sam: Good idea. Except for one thing.
Denise: No ladder.
Sam: Right. A log of some kind?
Denise (looking around): We have nothing that will help us get to the other side.
Sam: I guess we just stay here. There’s nothing we can do on our own, and there is no one to help us.
Denise (getting frustrated): Maybe you don’t realize the consequences of not getting to the other side? Sounds like you really don’t understand what’s at risk here.
Sam: I know, I know. We know things will be better there. It’s just—how do we get there?
Denise: Look, there’s got to be some sort of manual or instructions that will tell us what to do.
Sam (sighing): I think we are beaten. There is no hope unless someone comes to make a bridge to the other side.
Denise: We can’t just wait—what if no one comes?
Sam: Well, nothing has worked by trying to solve it ourselves, right?
Lights fade as they continue looking at the gap, contemplating their next step.
