Scene VII – The Crucifixion

R1: Mortification!

R2: Degradation!

R1: Humiliation!

Narrator: When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified him, along with two criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.

R1: He had been brought to this place by fear, bad judgment, lies, false testimony, jealousy… but mostly by sin!

R2: Arrested in the pre-dawn by a gang of thugs—thugs recruited, orchestrated, and urged on by temple leaders.

R1: Tried in mock trials by Roman officials who fully knew of his innocence, but who were weak and easily stared down by a show of uprising.

R2: Taken directly—immediately—from trial to the place of punishment and death, violating their own Jewish law.

R1: They placed on his head a crown of thorns and forced him to carry his own cross on shoulders ripped apart by cruel whips.

Narrator: “Hail! King of the Jews!”

R2: They hung him from the cross. Above his head, they fashioned a sign which read:

Narrator: “JESUS OF NAZARETH… KING OF THE JEWS.”

R1: The chief Jewish priests objected to this sign, begging Pilate to change it to:

“This man claimed to be King of the Jews.”

Narrator: But Pilate replied:

“What I have written, I have written!”
