John’s Reflection
(Actor is sitting on a stool, head down in prayer.)
JOHN:
Gracious God, Holy Father,
I, John, your humble and undeserving servant, come to You now. I beg You for strength and guidance in these days. I thank You for being my comfort and my tower, Lord. I pray You would give me wisdom through Your Son, Jesus, as He has been my faithful teacher.
And He has been much more than a teacher, Father. When I think back to how much He has changed my life, I know He is so much more than just a teacher.
Thank You for hearing my prayer, Father!
(John stands, signaling the completion of his prayer. He continues speaking.)
We were born within months of each other, and yet our families were worlds apart in their understanding of our entrances into the world.
Jesus’ mother really should not have been with child. Really, there would have been no physical explanation for her pregnancy—no explanation other than the one given by God’s angel, Gabriel. I often try to imagine how a young, uneducated girl could accept this news and carry out such a tremendous responsibility. But this… my human mind cannot comprehend.
What is even more puzzling is that when my parents were told their prayers had been answered and they would have a child, they doubted! They doubted the very One who formed a baby—the King of Kings—in a virgin’s womb!
Well, punishment was given for doubting God’s messenger. After all, the messenger must have been right. (Holds arms straight out to his sides and looks at himself.) Here I am!
I never doubted God’s power, for I knew the plans He had for me. And I wasn’t silent in telling others about God’s plan, either!
I spent my whole life following the teachings of God the Father. People knew this and often asked me questions about the Lord’s teachings.
(Smiles at the audience.)
Do you know that they would often ask me my opinion about a situation and try to justify their sinful actions? I would just tell them that it is not me they should explain themselves to, but to the God of all creation.
For without repentance, God will seek His vengeance. Many of them looked completely shocked that I would be so blunt. But I believe that in order for people to get the message, you have to tell them straight.
(Pauses, looks intently at the audience.)
Repent!
