Ideal for church productions that aim to inspire, heal, and unite.

Scene: Sanctuary
The song director, Pastor Terry, and choir are rehearsing for the upcoming Testimony/Gospel Singing event.

Pastor Terry:
Welcome, choir, to the rehearsal for our upcoming Gospel singing and testimony event which will be held here at the church in just a short time. As we rehearse, remember that the words to these songs will be listed in the program, and the audience will be expected to sing along with the choir. So, let’s get practicing!

Pastor Terry directs choir in: “Singing With The Saints” and “When God Dips His Love In My Heart”

Pastor Terry:
That was great! Most of you were here last year when we had this type of service. Just remember to relax, have fun, go with the flow, and remember—our job is to make it easier for the Holy Spirit to speak to all the guests that are brought in. Good night. See you at the "Singing."

(Choir exits, chatting and saying goodbye. Sue remains behind and goes to the altar to pray. Pastor Doug enters from another area of the stage.)

Pastor Doug:
Oh, hi Sue. I didn't realize someone was still in here. Is there something I can pray with you about?

Sue:
Thanks, Pastor Doug. I'm just finishing up with my usual prayers, you know, for the church—my extended family—and for Sharon and Ray and the kids. I’ll just be a few more minutes, if you don’t mind.

Pastor Doug:
Not at all. You take all the time you need. I’ll check the rest of the church and be back in a few minutes.

(Pastor Doug exits. Sue kneels and prays aloud.)

Sue (praying aloud):
O Lord, thank you again for being so near and loving to me. You’ve been a great comfort all these years—especially since Dan died. I know he’s there with you. Tell him how much I love him and miss him.
(pause)
Father, once again I lift up my family to you. I thank you and praise you for my daughter-in-law, Sharon, and her deep faith in you. I thank you that, now, Tiffany has discovered and accepted your love. She’s such a beautiful granddaughter!
Lord, I am moved with such compassion for my son, Ray. He is still hurting so much about his dad’s death, that I’m worried he has turned so far away from you that his heart has become hardened to your influence.
Father, I feel such a deep burden for Ray and my grandsons, Danny and Jeff. Please send someone to witness to them and draw them back to you. He used to love you and serve you. Don’t let their hurt keep them from knowing your love.
Oh, Father, let them meet Jesus.
It is in the mighty, loving name of Jesus that I ask it. Amen.

Lights fade to black.

Act One – Scene One
Setting: Barkley family living room/den. Couch, two easy chairs, tables, TV.
Lower-middle-class family home in mid-America. Present day.

(Lights up.)
Tiffany:
But, Dad, you don't understand how important this is to me. I've just got to have a new pair of jeans. The only ones that fit me look like they came from a fifties re-sale shop! It's so embarrassing to be the only one in my class to look like I've just come from a sock hop! Don't you care about me?

Ray (sternly, yet not harshly):
Tiff! I have already told you. We just don't have the money to spend $40–60 on the kind of jeans you want. I do care! I wished I could get them for you. But we just can't afford it. You'll just have to make do with what you've got. I mean, I do. You think I wouldn't like to have nicer clothes, too? I haven't bought myself any...

Tiffany (interrupting, almost in tears):
Oh Dad! You don't understand! You just don't care!

Ray (now very angry):
Tiffany Rae! Don't you talk to me that way! I work my tail off every day and you treat me like I'm the enemy. For the love of Mike! I ought to...

Sharon (walks between them, interrupting with a loud voice):
Wait a minute! This is getting out of hand. Let's all calm down before we say something we'll be sorry for.

Tiffany (more calm and respectful):
I'm sorry, Mom. Daddy, I'm sorry I got upset. It just seemed so important to me. I didn't mean to be disrespectful.

Ray (calmly, a little amazed):
Well, uh, that's O.K., Tiff. I shouldn't have been so quick to have my feelings hurt...

Tiffany walks away and begins doing homework. She hums “I’ve Got Peace Like a River.” Jeff watches, confused.

Jeff:
What's the deal?

Tiffany:
What do you mean?

Jeff:
What's going on with you? You just got your tail chewed out and you didn’t get your jeans—and you're sitting here singing about some river. Aren’t you mad?

Tiffany:
Well, I am disappointed... but I’m not mad. I did get disrespectful, and that was wrong. And Dad did apologize. And, well... I remembered what we talked about at church—that God really cares about me. Even the small stuff like clothes and food. I decided I just needed to pray and wait for God to do what He thinks is right for me.

Jeff (dumbfounded):
What? You really believe that God stuff?
