This poetic reflection captures the anticipation of John the Baptist as he prepares the way for Jesus, the Messiah. The imagery evokes desert wilderness, his rugged lifestyle of honey and locusts, and his sandaled feet as he journeys with a mission.

Through a voice crying out, he calls for repentance, urging sinners to enter the waters and prepare their hearts. The message builds in urgency—Jesus is nearing, the Messiah is coming.

The poem culminates in the revelation that Jesus has come not only to fulfill prophecy but to show humanity the way to salvation.

Poetess Betty Jean Cleland has written this short poem based on the ministry of John the Baptist,
