What is the meaning of life—pleasure, possessions, projects, riches, wisdom, happiness? Or is it something deeper? This thought-provoking drama explores the timeless question through the lens of three characters wrestling with life’s purpose. Their search takes them through human philosophy, pleasure, and reason, only to discover that true meaning comes not from empty pursuits but from faith in God.
This engaging short play is a perfect way to spark meaningful conversations in church services, youth groups, or small gatherings.

Script sample:
Bill is sitting at center stage, eyes closed, hands folded. Jane enters after a few moments, tries not to stare, then finally moves toward Bill.
Jane: Uhhh, excuse me . . .
Bill doesn’t react. Jane tries again.
Jane: Excuse me . . . Uhhh, are you . . . all right?
Bill (annoyed, opens eyes): Yes, can I help you?
Jane: Actually I was wondering if I could help you . . . are you OK?
Bill: Except for some difficulty in getting privacy, yes, I am just fine.
Bill goes back to meditating. Jane looks around, embarrassed.
Jane: Uh . . . mind if I ask what you are doing?
Bill (now really annoyed): I . . am . . . attempting . . to find the meaning of life. Now, do you mind?
Bill goes back to meditating. Jane again looks around, embarrassed.
Jane: And, are . . . you . . . finding it . . . the meaning of life, that is?
Bill (annoyed): Finding the meaning of life? . . . If you knew anything at all you’d realize that it is not possible to find the meaning of life!
Jane (confused): Not possible? . . . So . . tell me again . . . why would you try to find the meaning of life if you know that it’s not possible to find the meaning of life?
Bill: You know, some of you people are so simplistic in your thinking! Like how would a person stand the strain if he didn’t search for meaning?
Rhonda comes on stage.
Rhonda: Hey guys, how’s things?
Jane: Me, I am OK, but Bill here is trying to find the meaning of life . . . which apparently cannot be found, or so he says . . .
Rhonda: That may make searching less of a priority, don’t you think?
Bill: Do neither of you understand the impossibility of finding the meaning of life?
Rhonda: Well, it is kinda a big subject, hard to define.
Bill: Well it’s not so much being hard to define. I mean, everyone knows the goal in life is happiness.
Jane: OK, but what is happiness, how can that be defined?
Bill: Simple again . . . happiness is living in agreement with nature.
Rhonda: Care to tell how all of humanity can always live in agreement with nature?
Bill: Well, see, that’s the rub—we can’t.
Jane: OK, let me get this straight . . . The meaning in life is happiness, which is living in agreement with nature . . . which you admit is impossible.
Bill: Exactly. That’s why I said, before I was so rudely interrupted, that finding the meaning of life is impossible.
