Marching Orders

This powerful Christian monologue, inspired by 1 Peter 2, places the audience directly in the role of soldiers receiving their commanding officer’s charge. With military imagery and the story of sacrifice, the piece draws a clear parallel to Christ’s ultimate example—calling believers to live lives worthy of the One who gave everything for them.

The commanding officer addresses the audience directly.

Officer: Josephson, Marcusson, be seated!

It is my duty as your commanding officer to review your conduct and carriage under fire here in this division.

You have come to this place from very different courses.

Lieutenant Josephson, may I apprise you that your conduct in the past few months has been unbecoming an officer in this regiment.

I have received your letter asking for clemency, citing the fact that you were beaten and mistreated while in enemy hands as a prisoner of war.

Though this army certainly recognizes what you endured as a POW, the fact remains that you were captured by the enemy while wandering, against orders, in an off limits area.
Not only did your actions place you in danger, your reckless behavior required your superior officer, Colonel Jessop, to enter enemy territory alone to free you.

As you are well aware, in the course of securing your freedom, Colonel Jessop died. He was martyred for your sake.
