A Full-Length Christian Christmas Drama by Tom David Barna

Before the manger, before Bethlehem, there was a young couple whose lives were about to change forever.

Mary and Joseph are preparing for a future together. Their families are celebrating their betrothal, wedding plans are taking shape, and life seems filled with promise. But when the angel Gabriel delivers an extraordinary message, everything they thought they knew about their future is suddenly called into question.

How will Mary explain what has happened? Will Joseph believe her? And how will their families respond to news that seems impossible to understand?

Kingdom Come, a full-length Christian drama by Tom David Barna, explores the events surrounding the birth of Jesus through the eyes of Mary, Joseph, and those closest to them.

With moments of humor, tender family relationships, uncertainty, and deeply personal struggles, this imaginative retelling invites audiences to consider the faith and courage required of two ordinary people entrusted with an extraordinary calling.

DIM SPOT HALF UP ON MARY

(Mary is praying silently.)

MARY

(Long beat.) I am grateful, my Lord, for the many gifts You have given me. I am especially grateful for my family and of course for Joseph…

(Long beat. Mary falls asleep. Candle goes out.)

(Dream sequence begins.)

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Mary. (Beat.) Mary. (Beat.) Your Father sends His many blessings upon you.

(Mary, stirs but does not hear Gabriel.)

LIGHTS HALF UP

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Mary, your Father sends His many blessings upon you.

(Awoken, a confused Mary rises slowly and gently looks around the room.)

MARY

Uncle, is that you?

(Mary looks for her uncle without urgency.)

MARY

(Beat.) Uncle?

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) He… is with you always, Mary.

(Mary cautiously walks about the room.)

MARY

This is…

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) I am Gabriel.

MARY

Gabriel?

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) I am Gabriel, a messenger sent by our Father in Heaven.

MARY

(Confused.) Hello…

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) I come with joyous news.

MARY

(Beat.) Do I know you…

(Mary pauses, then resumes slowly searching the room.)

Please join me in the garden with my family…

(Mary slowly inches towards stage left and then stage right but is held back by something she doesn’t understand. Mary becomes frightened.)

GABRIEL

Mary.

MARY

(Softly.) Please, I need to be with my mother...

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) I am Gabriel, Mary; a messenger from God with news for you and you, alone.

MARY

(To stage left. Softly.) Mother…

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Do not be afraid, Mary. For you have found favor with our God.

MARY

(Softly.) What do you want with me? Please show yourself…

(In anguish, Mary collapses to the floor.)

GABRIEL

(From offstage.)(Gently.) Be still, Mary; for I bring you great tidings.

MARY

(Softly.) Whoever you are, you are frightening me…

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Mary…

(Mary grows calm and begins to pray to herself.)

GABRIEL

Mary.

MARY

(Beat.) Why are you hiding from me?

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Mary… I am here.

MARY

(Beat.) Unless you show yourself…

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Do not be afraid, Mary. I am an angel sent…

MARY

(Softly.) If you are an angel, then I must be dreaming...

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) You are not dreaming for I am truly here. (Beat.) A wonderful gift is coming. Mary, I am the angel Gabriel…

MARY

(Whispers.) If you are truly an angel, then show yourself. Unless I see you, I cannot believe you nor anything you have to say...

GABRIEL

(From offstage.) Then you shall believe.

(Gabriel enters and stands before Mary. Gabriel’s entrance is without special lighting or sound effects. His appearance is gentle to Mary and is without fanfare.)

MARY

(Slightly surprised.) I am sorry, I see you, but I don’t know you.

(Gabriel nonchalantly moves about the room.)

GABRIEL

I have good news for you, Mary. You shall be with child this very night.

MARY

(Long beat.) What? No. Of course not. Why would you say such things… How dare you imply…

(An angry Mary stands, shuffles about before deciding to sit in a chair. She looks away from Gabriel.)
