Just Borrowing Your Colt

When Jesus sent two disciples to borrow a stranger’s donkey, they didn’t know they were fulfilling ancient prophecy—or walking straight into the most powerful week in history. This short, lighthearted skit brings Palm Sunday to life with humor, curiosity, and a touch of tension. As cheers ring out and palm branches wave, an uneasy shadow looms, reminding us that the joy of the crowd can quickly shift. A thoughtful and fun addition to your Easter season service or youth performance.
Run-Time: 5 minutes
Cast: 4 (Narrator, Simon, Nate, Ezra – all can be male or female)
Bible Reference: Matthew 21:1–11; Zechariah 9:9
Scene & Staging Suggestions:
- Setting: A simple stage with minimal props. You can divide the stage into three implied “zones”: the road to the village, the place where the colt is tied, and the cheering crowd area. No scene changes needed—actors can shift positions and mime transitions.
- Tone Shift: Use lighting or music to shift from cheerful to solemn near the end (dim lights, soft underscore).
Sample Script
Lights up. The NARRATOR stands to the side. SIMON and NATE are walking.]
NARRATOR:
It was the beginning of the biggest week in history. But these two disciples? They were just trying to follow directions.
SIMON:
Okay. So let me get this straight—we’re supposed to walk into some guy’s front yard, untie his donkey... and walk off with it?
NATE:
Technically a colt. Baby donkey. Which sounds harder to sneak away with, if you ask me.
SIMON:
And when the owner catches us—because obviously he will—we say...
NATE & SIMON (together):
“The Lord needs it.”
(beat)
SIMON:
That’s our plan? That’s the entire plan?
NATE:
Hey, it’s not ours to understand. He told us what to do. We trust Him.
NARRATOR:
So they trusted. And they walked. A little nervous? Sure. But obedient just the same.
[They reach an imaginary spot, see the colt, and start untying it. EZRA enters.]
EZRA:
Whoa, whoa, whoa! What do you two think you're doing with my colt?
SIMON (awkward):
Hey, how are you? Okay, yes, this looks bad.
NATE:
Very bad.
SIMON:
But—hear us out—do you know Jesus of Nazareth?
EZRA:
The preacher? The healer?
NATE:
Yes! That Jesus! We are with him. He’s kind of a big deal.
SIMON:
Blind people see. Deaf people hear. Storms listen to Him. Even Lazarus—you know Lazarus?
EZRA:
The dead guy?
NATE:
Formerly dead guy.
SIMON:
Exactly! That Jesus. And He sent us personally.
NATE:
And He said, “Go into the village. You’ll find a colt tied up. Untie it and bring it to me.”
SIMON:
And if anyone asks what we’re doing...
NATE & SIMON (point at Ezra):
...which you did... Good job!
SIMON:
We are to say: “The Lord needs it.”
EZRA (beat, thoughtful): He chose my colt?
