It’s Easy Being A Mom is a humorous and heartfelt five-part readers’ drama that explores the challenges and joys of motherhood. Through a series of relatable anecdotes, four mothers share their experiences of raising children, from sleepless nights and forgotten school picture days to cheering at sporting events in freezing weather. The dialogue highlights the selflessness, strength, and love that define motherhood, culminating in a humorous but powerful moment where a young boy, after hearing all the stories, still insists that being a mom must be easy.

By Karl Wagner
SCENE 1
(ONE enters with BOY and takes a seat. BOY starts to leave.)
ONE
Where do you think you’re going?
BOY
Mom, I came with you. Do I have to sit here the whole time?
ONE
I know it’ll be difficult for you, but yes, you do have to sit here the whole time.
(BOY plops down sulking. TWO enters from one side, and THREE from the other.)
TWO
Whew, I made it! I was beginning to think I wouldn’t.
THREE
I know what you mean! By the time I got breakfast done, and my husband off to work, and the oldest to his job, I felt like I needed a nap.
(FOUR enters speaking.)
FOUR
I can’t believe they make these games so early. They have to know it’s hard on us moms, especially a single mom.
BOY
How hard can it be to be a mom?
(All moms stare at BOY, with “mom” looks.)
ONE
There’s nothing to it, especially if you like sitting on freezing cold metal bleachers…
TWO
…watching a softball game…
THREE
…or sitting there for an hour, waiting to glimpse her run by in cross country…
FOUR
…or a football game, on a cold, rainy, Friday night…
ONE
…just so you can say, “Yes, I saw you,” and mean it.
TWO
There’s nothing to being a mom…
THREE
…like sitting up all night with a sick child…
FOUR
…doing your best to hide your own fear, so you can keep the child calm.
ONE
Or maybe when your six-year-old goes on her first overnight stay…
TWO
…or walks into the school building by themselves that first day…
THREE
…or your 14-year-old comes home with blue hair…
FOUR
…or your 16-year-old takes the car out for the first time…
ONE
…or your daughter goes off to college, five states away…
TWO
…or your 18-year-old son goes off to war.
THREE
It’s not hard for a mom, being a referee…
FOUR
…judge and jury…
ONE
…and best friend.
TWO
There’s nothing to being a mom, especially if you love carpooling or being a taxi…
THREE
…or making a costume for school…
FOUR
…the night before it’s needed because your son just mentioned it to you…
ONE
…or baking a few hundred cookies they also just mentioned they are supposed to bring tomorrow.
TWO
It’s not hard to try and explain why people go to war when God says, “Thou shalt not kill.”
THREE
Or why people or pets die…
FOUR
…why bad things happen to good people…
ONE
…and that God is still in control.
TWO
It’s easy, and fun, going to church in your new dress that the baby just threw up on…
THREE
…holding one son with your free hand and shuffling another one with your feet, while trying to find a seat.
FOUR
It’s real easy teaching your son to cook…
ONE
…or your daughter how to make a jump shot.
