The disciple Thomas reflects on the events surrounding Jesus’ statement, “I am the way.” As Jesus was giving His followers advance knowledge of His imminent death and departure, Thomas admits that belief comes to him slowly. He rationalizes and contemplates the meaning of Christ’s words, particularly in the context of the historical paths known to his people.
Monologue based on John 14:6. “I am the way.”

Sample from Script
(The actor enters the stage, thoughtful, deep in contemplation.)
THOMAS (ACTOR)
(Pausing, reflecting)
“You know the way where I am going.”
(Shakes head slightly, confused)
This statement… confused me.
How could we know the way?
(Beat, thinking)
For us, “the way” was clearly set out.
We knew full well The Way of the Red Sea, for that was the route of the Exodus, the path taken by Moses and our ancestors.
(Beat, recalling history)
And all too well, we knew The Way of the Land of the Philistines—the Egyptian “Way of Horus”, the ancient military highway that paralleled the Mediterranean Sea from the frontier fortress of Zilu to Raphia, deep in Philistine territory.
(Lowering voice slightly, as if recalling the burden of history)
It was on this way that conquering armies had marched—bringing, time and again, yet another cruel master to bring our people to heel.
(Beat, eyes narrowing in thought)
Or… perhaps He meant The “Way of the Sea.”
(Looks outward, picturing it in his mind)
This was the path that led from Dor, on the Mediterranean, past the Sea of Chinnereth, to Damascus…
(Tone darkens)
…the very route taken by the Assyrians in their invasion—some seven hundred years ago.
(Pauses, gaze lowering, lost in thought as the weight of history and Jesus’ words settle on him.)
(Lights fade to black.)
