This comedy by Erick McGraw is all about fear, and shows that there are times when we do get afraid, even though Being fearful. God is always with us through the storm. But when Elloise's friend Gladys Feldman woke up with a leg cramp, I mean, what more proof do you need that there is a hurricane coming to Arizona and that we need to be afraid?

SCENE OPENS

(Sally stands in her kitchen at a center block, mixing something in a large bowl. Suddenly, Elloise rushes in, dressed in a rain slicker and hat, carrying a large shovel. Sally pauses, watching as her mother lifts the shovel and haphazardly deposits it on top of the center block.)

(Elloise quickly turns on her heel and rushes offstage. Sally, in total astonishment, stares at the shovel now lying among her cooking utensils. A moment later, Elloise returns, carrying a small board (2x4) or a piece of plywood. She places it on top of the center block as well. Sally remains stunned by the entire event. As Elloise turns to make another run for supplies, Sally stops her.)

SALLY

Mother! What are you doing?

ELLOISE

There’s a hurricane a’comin’!

SALLY

A hurricane A’COMIN’?!

ELLOISE

Yeah! In the South, when something really big is about to happen, they put the “Ah” in front of it.

SALLY

Mother! We live in the middle of Arizona. Where did you get this crazy weather report?

ELLOISE

I was talking to Gladys Feldman this morning… (hesitating)

SALLY

And?

ELLOISE

And she woke up with a leg cramp. Need I say more?

SALLY

Is this the same Gladys Feldman who predicted a blizzard in the Bahamas?

ELLOISE

(Shrugging) What’s your point?

SALLY

Mother, even if there was a hurricane A’COMIN’

(Elloise crosses her arms defensively.)

ELLOISE

Don’t patronize me, Sally.

SALLY

I’m not patronizing you, Mother. I’m A’Mockin’ you! Listen, Mother, even if there was a hurricane coming, why should we be so fearful? Do you not remember Pastor Herman’s message last Sunday?

ELLOISE

Vaguely. I’m lucky if I can remember the names of my own children.

SALLY

Mother… he spoke on Fear. Remember? He was speaking about 2 Timothy 1:7—“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

ELLOISE

Oh, yeah. Well, I can relate to the power and love, but as for the sound mind…

SALLY

Mother, we have no reason to fear anything. Think about it—God Himself created the wind and rain. He brings the hurricanes, the rains, and the winds that seem so fierce and threatening. However, He’s in control.
