Great Commission Christian

The script is a monologue featuring a Christian struggling with the concept of being "perfect" as commanded in Matthew 5:48. The character enters, mumbling in frustration after attending a Bible study on becoming Christ-like. They express doubt about achieving perfection in a secular world full of distractions.

Reflecting on their pastor’s teaching about being a Great Commission Christian, the character recalls some key points: living simply, prioritizing prayer, and fellowshipping with other believers. However, they feel overwhelmed by the high standard and doubt their ability to succeed alone.

Cast: Monologue, any age, male or female
Run-time: Approximately 3-5 minutes
Setting: No special sound, lighting, props, or costuming. The actor has just come in from a Bible study, wearing a jacket appropriate for the season and carrying a Bible. A chair may be placed at center stage for the jacket.

Actor enters alone, mumbling to themselves.)

ACTOR: (Frustrated, to self) Perfect! How am I supposed to be perfect? (Notices the audience.) Oh, I didn’t realize you were here. Sorry for my mumbling, but it’s just that I was at this Bible study. Really tough topic—"Aiming to be Christ-like." Of course, as a Christian, I want to be more like Jesus, but as a human, I don’t see how that’s possible.

You see, the pastor read a verse that really stuck with me. It’s... oh, here, I’ll read it. (Looks up in Bible.) Matthew 5:48: “But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

Perfect! (Looks up from Bible.) Perfect! That means totally without mistake! How can I do that living in a secular world? I am the only Christian where I work. The radio and TV inundate me with garbage constantly! How am I supposed to be perfect? I get this vision of being a perfect person. Seems to me that’s a tough vision to run with!

The pastor talked about being a Great Commission Christian. He gave out a list of things that make us a Great Commission Christian. I think I left it in the car. (Thinking.) A few I can remember: living simply. (Gestures around.) Look around—can’t get much more simple than this, do you think? What else? Make prayer your first work. Fellowship with those who share your faith, regardless of color or culture. Oh, there were more!

I mean, how is someone supposed to live up to that standard? I can sure try... I want to try, but I just don’t think that me, all alone in this secular world, can do it. (Sighs, then flips through the Bible. Stops briefly at one spot, moves on, frowns, then goes back.)

What’s this? (Reads aloud.) “But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power to testify about me with great effect… to the ends of the earth.” (Looks up from Bible.)
