(Tim enters stage from one side, Brian enters from the opposite side, meeting at center stage.)

Tim (incredulous): Brian? Is it you?

Brian: Oh, hi Tim. Yep, it’s me all right.

Tim: Of all the people I never expected to see around gestures with hand around here. What in the world would bring Mr. Successful Businessperson down here?

Brian: Hi, Tim. Yeah, I thought I would come down and visit the old neighborhood.

Tim: Old neighborhood? thinks Yeah, you’re right about that. This area is getting old, kinda run down, huh?

Brian (smiling): Not us, just this place!

Tim: Right! So what brings you down here to the projects?

Brian: I was just thinking about a little boy, that’s all.

Tim: A little boy? Down here? This place is a long way from your high-falutin’ office tower! How would you know anyone down here?

Brian: No, not here. It’s one of my employees who lives in an older part of town, her son is having some trouble right now.

Tim: You have lost me. If you are trying to help a child in another part of town, why are you down here?

Brian: Guess you could say I am going back to visit the past.

Tim: I get it. You knew a child who lived down here, huh?

Brian (hesitates, looks at Tim): Yes... yes, I guess you could say that.

Tim: This kid you knew; he, she...

Brian: He.

Tim: ...he had a tough childhood?

Brian: Oh yes, very tough.

Tim: It’s hard just getting by sometimes, staying out of trouble. This kid you knew, he got into trouble?

Brian: Yeah. Constantly in trouble, seemed like.

Tim: What kind of trouble?

Brian: You name it. It was an area a lot like this one—no real houses, no grass or trees—not a sign of hope anywhere.

Tim: There’s lots of kids living like that.

Brian: Yes there are. Far too many.

Tim: What’s this kid’s name?

Brian: Everyone just called him “Tootough.”

Tim: Tough kid, huh?

Brian: Yep. At least that’s what he tried to show others. Inside he was just plain scared.

Tim: Tootough! What chance does a kid like that have?

Brian: On his own? None.

Tim: Became just another statistic, huh?

Brian: Actually, no. Tootough made it out of here.

Tim: One of the lucky ones, huh? Helps to have a family and their support, schooling.

Brian: Tootough didn’t have a real family from the time he was seven years old. He lived at home with his Mom and three younger brothers. His Dad had moved out on them, and they weren’t sure where his sister was.
Tootough didn’t much get to school on time, often not at all—he was too busy looking after his brothers. And home was one big room, divided by blankets hung from the ceiling.

Tim: Sounds like this kid had a rough time. Makes you wonder what keeps him going.

Brian: This guy, Pop Anders, who handed out Bible tracts on the corner, he invited Tootough to church with him a couple times. It was the first time he had ever been in a church.

Tim: Would be quite an experience, first time. Did he ask Pop any questions about church?

Brian: I remember he did say one thing.

Tim: What was that?

Brian: Brian got all upset on the way home from church, wanted to know what this God could give him. Brian said if God was so awesome, Brian wanted God to give him a Dad and a sister, and a home with real rooms.
But Brian said that he didn’t really think God could give him anything or help him out or anything.

Tim: Tough kid talk, huh? Wait. Brian. Tootough’s real name was Brian?

Brian: Yep. That was his name.

Tim: Weird. Brian. Same as your name. Coincidence.

Brian: Yeah, real weird. Coincidence.

Tim: What did Pop say to Brian, how did he answer those questions? I mean, really, what can you say?

Brian: Pop explained it to him like this—have you ever walked down a windy, dark street late at night all by yourself? Lonely. Frightened.
You think to yourself that you sure could use someone with you, maybe just to hold your hand. You know full well that even though someone is with you, the street is still going to be just as dark, and the wind is going to be just as strong.
But, somehow, having someone there with you makes it all seem a bit better. You don’t feel so alone, and you feel a bit stronger to handle the not-so-good stuff.

Tim: What else did Pop say?
