It’s moments after Jesus has ascended, and three disciples are still standing around, gazing up at the clouds — certain that something else is about to happen any second now. They speculate wildly about the sky, forget the instructions Jesus gave them, and nearly miss an unexpected visitor — the Holy Spirit Himself! This light-hearted skit brings laughter as the disciples bumble through their assumptions, while gently reminding us that we’re called to step out in faith — not just stand around with “cloudy vision.”

Message: It’s easy to keep looking up, waiting for Jesus to act — but He’s already sent us to be His witnesses in the world. Are we paying attention to the Spirit’s prompting?

Run-time: 5–6 minutes (expandable)

Cast: 5

  • Peter — enthusiastic, bold, not always thinking first
  • James — analytical, gets caught in overthinking
  • John— practical, voice of reason
  • New Friend (Holy Spirit) — warm, persistent, friendly presence
  • Angel
  • Mary - could be an extra in the scene with the disciples

No special props or set required — simple sky/cloud backdrop or plain stage works fine.

Sample Script

(Lights up. PETER, JAMES, and JOHN stand center stage, staring up, heads tilted back.)

PETER (pointing upward):
Did you see that one? That cloud looked just like a throne! Maybe He’s sitting on it right now!

JAMES (squinting):
I think that one looks like a lamb... lying down... or possibly a very lumpy pillow.

JOHN (rubbing neck):
That one looks like... mother’s bread loaf. (pause) Now I’m hungry.

PETER:
What if He’s peeking through one of those clouds? “Surprise! Still here!”

JAMES:
Or maybe He’s orbiting. You know, celestial circuits. Could return at any moment.

PETER:
Should we start a Sky Watchers Club? First meeting: right now! I’ll be president!

JOHN (arms crossed):
Or... hear me out... we could do what He actually told us to do?

PETER:
But what if this IS part of the plan? Cloud duty! Vigilance! We can’t miss His return!

JAMES (serious):
Perhaps we should invent sky-gazing goggles. Patent pending!

JOHN:
You two are impossible. My neck is staging a protest.

(Enter NEW FRIEND quietly from side stage, observing them for a moment.)

NEW FRIEND (warm, gentle):
Friends... what are you looking for?

(Disciples jump, startled.)

JAMES:
Uh… nothing! Well... something. We’re… watching.

PETER:
Jesus just went up — we figured He might come right back! Like... a boomerang Messiah!

NEW FRIEND (smiles slightly):
And... what did He tell you to do?

JOHN (slowly):
He said… wait in Jerusalem... for the gift His Father promised.

NEW FRIEND:
And is that gift above you… or beside you?

(Disciples glance awkwardly at each other.)

PETER:
Well... I assumed above. I mean, big exit, clouds... it felt sky-related.

JAMES:
Statistically speaking, 100% of ascensions have been upward.

NEW FRIEND (gently guiding):
And yet... what of the promise of One who would come... to be with you... always?

(Pause. Disciples exchange puzzled looks. They glance at each other, whispering.)

JOHN (to others, whispering):
Who do you think He meant? What kind of “gift” is this?

PETER:
Maybe... Elijah? He was always popping in and out of places.

JAMES:
Or... Moses? He did meet with God face to face!

JOHN (grinning):
What about Gabriel? He’s already good with announcements!
