Who are we ultimately serving?

In Backyard Servant 5 – Serving Jesus, Willie, Woodie, Tracey, and Lynn reflect on everything they’ve learned about service—from helping their family, friends, neighbors, and community—and ask the big question: Why do we serve? As they wrestle with tough choices about sacrifice, generosity, and faith, they come to understand that true service isn’t about recognition or reward—it’s about serving Jesus Himself.

Based on Mark 12:29-31, this final skit in the Backyard Servant series challenges audiences to see every act of kindness as an act of worship. With heartfelt dialogue, humor, and a powerful message, it’s the perfect way to close out a VBS series, youth event, or church program.

All actors come on stage, talking excitedly.)

Woodie: You know, the best thing of all in serving at the Main Street Mission was finding just how nice the people are. They are just like everyday guys.

Tracey: Yeh, I have to admit I was a bit scared about going down to the Mission at first, but like you say, Woodie, those folks made us feel right at home.

Willie: I can't help feeling that I have so much, and those folks really have nothing. It bothers me to see the poverty, the sickness, the addictions.

Lynn: Me too, but really, don’t you think it should bother us?

Woodie: How do you mean, it should bother us?

Lynn: Well, seems to me that if it didn’t bother us, we should be ashamed.

Tracey: Ashamed? . . . What have we to be ashamed about? . . . After all, we did spend the day serving at the Main Street Mission.

Lynn: Yes, we did, but then we got to go home to nice clean homes, enjoy all the luxuries that the folks on Main Street will likely never know.

Woodie: I feel for those folks too, don’t get me wrong. And I want to go back often to help and to share what I have with the Main Street folks. But is there anything wrong in enjoying the homes that our families have worked hard for?

Willie: But do we deserve all we have when others have nothing?

Lynn: Exactly. How can we feel good about what we have? Shouldn’t we share all we have with the Main Street people?

Tracey: You mean like sell our houses, our cars, give all the money to the poor?

Lynn: I’m not sure, but I think that’s what I mean.

Woodie: Well, after being at the Mission, I can see that I don’t need all that I have, and that means I am going to have to make some changes in my life. . . . But does serving my community mean giving away everything I have?

Tracey: Those are tough questions, aren't they?

Lynn: Seems like serving our community sure does open our eyes.

Willie: Makes a person think about what you want to do with your life.

Tracey: You mean like choosing a job?

Lynn: I feel like we need to be serving people who so badly need our help.

Woodie: But not everyone can work full-time at the Main Street Mission.
