Having the vision to reach people—and carrying through on the vision.

Two enthusiastic friends, Carey and Derek, brainstorm brilliant evangelism ideas, convinced they have a clear vision from God on how to reach others. They make a detailed list of outreach programs but hesitate when it comes to taking action themselves. Instead, they leave the list behind, hoping someone else will carry out the vision. But what happens when their ideas never reach the right hands?

A powerful and humorous skit that challenges audiences to step up and take responsibility for the vision God places on their hearts. Inspired by Habakkuk 2:2, it leaves a lasting impact with the question: "What if someone else doesn’t see your vision? What if the 'someone' is you?"

Run-Time:

Approximately 10 minutes

Cast:

2 actors (any age, male or female)
1 optional janitor (non-speaking role)

Biblical Reference:

Habakkuk 2:2“Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, that the one who reads it may run.”
Proverbs 29:18“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Sample of script:

Carey: That’s a great idea, Derek!

Derek: And then, we could also start a weekly meeting!

Carey: Those are some of the best ideas we have ever had, Derek!

Derek: Thanks, Carey, I really do like the way God has shown us some terrific methods for evangelization!

Carey: Oh, for sure! I think we have a real clear vision of what God wants us to do! You know, we really should write some of these ideas down!

(Derek takes a pen and paper from the table, writes.)

Derek: Okay, “Ways to Evangelize the World.” (looks up) What do we start with?

Carey: Definitely your idea about meeting people on their level—getting out to where they are. We can’t expect the lost to come here to us!

(Derek writes furiously.)

Derek: Good, good! Also, what was that thing you said about breaking down stereotypes? I liked that, Carey!

Carey: Oh, yeh, well if we want non-Christians to trust and understand us as Christians, we have to make sure they don’t feel threatened. They have to know we are normal people, that we aren’t going to jump down their throat with a Bible!

Derek: Exactly! And just to think, we are not only thinking through this vision, we are actually taking the time to write down these great ideas! (thinks) Now, how are we going to start this?

Carey: Well, someone just has to get some outreach programs going.

Derek: Okay, who?

Carey: Who? Well, people who… well… I don’t know. But it can’t just be anyone!

Derek: No, of course not! It has to be someone that God has called specifically to this area of ministry.

(Carey thinks.)

Carey: Derek, do you think that maybe God may have called us?

Derek: Us? No way! I hardly have the time! I have basketball, hockey, work! Where could I possibly fit in time for this?

Carey: You’re right! Now, then, back to our list.

Derek: What about kids? There should be some sort of after-school program at the church where the kids could come.

Carey: Yes, and a weekly club night too!

Derek: Somebody could start a morning daycare where single moms could drop off their kids while the moms go to work.
