When Mel returns to the town where they grew up, memories flood back—especially of their childhood home and beloved church. But everything has changed. The once-beautiful house is unrecognizable, and the old sanctuary has become a photography studio. As Mel reconnects with friends Bert and Tracy, they wrestle with what makes a place truly special. Is it the building itself—or the meaning behind it?

This heartfelt and reflective skit leads audiences through nostalgia, grief, and spiritual rediscovery. Through candid conversation and gentle humor, What Makes it Special?© reminds us that sacredness isn’t found in bricks or fences, but in the presence of God and the love that fills a place. A beautiful fit for worship services, youth nights, or small group gatherings.

Sample script:

Scene: A familiar town sidewalk. Mel and Tracy are chatting when Bert joins them.

MEL: Man, it's great to come back to the old hometown!

TRACY: You have been away, what is it, three years now?

MEL: Almost four and a half, try!

TRACY: Wow, amazing! Didn’t realize it was that long ago.

MEL: I simply cannot believe how much the town has grown!

TRACY: Well, you know, since the auto parts manufacturing plant moved into town, everything has just boomed!

MEL: And all the new homes that have been built—so gorgeous!
Hey, I am gonna go back and see my old house. I’ve been missing it so much! Especially since Mom passed away... I just wanted to... you know... see it all again.

TRACY: Uh, listen, why don’t we, like, go over to my house? My mom would just love to see you again!

MEL: Well, sure—but first, I really would like to wander over to Elmwood Terrace, my old home. Just for old time’s sake, know what I mean?

(Bert enters from the side and approaches.)

TRACY: Hey there, Bert. You remember Mel? Used to live on your street—moved away.

BERT: Hey Mel! How's things in the big city?

MEL: OK, busy. Glad to be back for a visit though. I was just going over to see the old house.

BERT: Better not go too close. Those rottweilers would sooner chew your leg off than look at you! And the people in the house? Even more scary.

MEL: You mean... in my old house?

TRACY: Well, fact is, your old house really isn’t at all like your old house anymore. Fence is mostly broken down...

MEL: You mean the nice picket fence my dad and I built?

BERT: Yard is all grown up in weeds.

MEL: What about Mom’s orchids?

BERT: Not sure what the people are growing in there, Mel, but I can tell you for sure—it is not orchids!
