A Powerful Monologue on Struggle, Faith, and Real Compassion

Part of DramaShare’s Leadership Skills series, What You Are Going Through is a deeply moving one-person dramette that explores how people respond—well or poorly—when someone is in crisis. As Irma silently reacts to a wave of offstage voices offering advice, judgment, clichés, or comfort, the audience is taken on a raw and emotional journey through grief, doubt, hope, and the quiet cry for real connection.

This script powerfully illustrates that quoting Scripture is not the same as living it—and that the greatest gift we can offer someone in pain is presence, not platitudes.

Theme: Supporting others in crisis | Authentic faith | Mental and emotional health
Cast: 1 on-stage actor (any gender), with optional voice roles offstage
Runtime: Approx. 8–10 minutes
Production Needs: Minimal staging, no props or special lighting
Perfect for: Leadership training, mental health awareness, worship services, youth ministry, retreats

Leadership Skills Dramette

Irma stands on stage, listening and reacting silently as each voice speaks from offstage.

Voice #1:
Hi Irma, good to see you out. Sorry about what you have been going through.
But, like I said, good you are getting over it, though.
I always say, “Fall off a horse, get back up on him now, else you never will.”

Voice #2:
Irma, I have a lot of respect for you, being here, after all you have been through.
I know how tough it really is.
I know how you feel—life hasn’t been kind to me either.
But what do you do? I mean, we all go through it, one time or another.

Voice #3:
I wanted to talk to you, Irma.
I have all you will ever need to get you through this down time in your life.
It is Isaiah 41:10 — “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
And James 4:7 — “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
I tell you, Irma, keep those gems deep in your heart—they are all you need.
Your days will be joyous and your troubles will never return if your faith is strong.

Voice #4:
I really feel for the situation you are in, Irma.
I don’t want to hurt you, but have you examined yourself?
I mean, are you very sure that it’s not God bringing justice to you and your family?
Perhaps something you’ve totally forgotten about, from your past.
Think now—what have you done to displease the Lord? Think.

Voice #5:
Poor Irma.
Might as well relax—it comes to everyone in their time.
It was just your time, your number came up, that’s all.
As sure as it comes, so will it eventually leave.
Play it cool. This too shall pass. Don’t sweat it.

Voice #6:
I’m here to help you through this, Irma.
I’ve had experience with this sort of thing.
Just needs a push here, a prod there—it’s no big thing.
Just tinker with it, it’ll come around.

Voice #7:
I know you feel down, Irma, but listen to me—don’t give in.
Keep a stiff upper lip, don’t give others the pleasure of seeing your tears.
No one really cares, you know. No one.

Voice #8:
You gotta look to see the stars, Irma!
The rainbows and silver linings are there—you just gotta look for them!
Life is short. Forget the tears, the gloom, the clouds, the sorrow.
Choose to see only the rainbows!
Rainbows are in!
