Note – If actors are clowning this drama, then actions and voices should be over-exaggerated compared to what is suggested.

Scene opens as Mary enters the stage carrying an ‘invisible’ jar of buttons. She is obviously very proud of this collection and carries it with great care.

(Sue enters from the opposite side of the stage and is immediately intrigued by what Mary is doing. Sneaking up behind Mary, Sue suddenly scares her.)

Sue: Boo!

Mary, shrieking: Yikes! Sue, what are you doing? I could have dropped this!

Sue: Sorry! I was just havin’ some fun!

Mary: Well, please be more careful next time you decide to have fun!

Sue: What are you doing, anyway? What have you got there?

Mary, excited: Here? You want to know all about what I have here?

Sue: I think so, as long as it doesn’t take too long.

Mary: Well, step right up, missy! Here lies one of the greatest collections known to mankind! Here lies one of the world’s finest collections you have ever seen! Here lies . . .

Sue, interrupting: Uh, I think this will take too long, so I’m gonna get going now . . .

Mary: Wait! You can’t leave now! I haven’t shown you the best part!

Sue: Okay, I guess I have a few minutes.

Mary: Sue, I want you to see the greatest, the most stupendous, the most tremendous . . .

Sue: Get on with it!

Mary: Okay, okay. Sue, I would like you to see my very finest collection of . . . buttons!

Sue: Buttons? That’s what all that build-up was for? Buttons? I gotta go now.

(Sue turns to leave, but Mary quickly catches her arm.)

Mary: Wait a minute, you don’t understand! These buttons are my pride and joy! You have to take some time to admire each and every one!
