When God changes the plan, will you still say yes?
“Unexpected, Without Excuse” takes us into the moment when a young person’s dream for the future collides with God’s calling. What starts as disappointment becomes a journey of obedience, grace, and faith.
Through quick dialogue, humor, and reflection, five friends wrestle with what it really means to follow God without excuse — no justifications, no hesitation. From Abraham’s faith to Mary’s courage, this short drama reminds us that God’s ways are rarely predictable… but always perfect.
Perfect for youth services, devotionals, and mission-themed Sundays, this 5-minute skit challenges believers to live a “no excuse” faith — one that simply says, “Yes, Lord.”

Simple stage, minimal setup. Characters 1 and 2 begin the scene.
1: Hey 2, what’s with the long face?
2: Just heard from the university. I was hoping—no, praying—to be accepted into the College of Law. Got a letter today… no room. And in the same mail, there was an invitation from seminary. Apparently, someone at church recommended me to be a pastor.
1: Hey, awesome! Guess God answered your prayer, huh?
2: As if! I really wanted to be in Law.
1: But you did pray. Obviously, God had other ideas.
(Other actors begin to enter as the conversation continues.)
3: Hey, 2! What’s this I hear—you’re going to seminary? Pastor 2! Has a nice ring to it!
4: Yes, I am so proud and happy for you!
2: Bummer! Sure wasn’t what I expected. Never in my craziest dreams did I imagine being a pastor.
5: Seems like when you hang around God, your craziest dreams aren’t crazy enough.
1: I read what you’re saying, 5. With God, you expect the unexpected. And you do as God instructs—without excuse.
5: How so, 1?
1: Think. Try Abraham and Sarah. They had this crazy dream about having a son. Wow—some son!
4: Even though the news made Sarah giggle, they went straight out and strapped a baby seat on her camel.
2: But a pastor? I’m not sure I have what it takes.
3: Lucky for you, God does. Remember Samson? He didn’t get his strength through a gym membership—it was by following God’s instructions.
5 (quietly): “Samson, stay away from the barbershop.”
4: Or maybe like Jacob. I mean, he wasn’t exactly prime material—liar, thief, crook. Hustled his brother, conned his father, swindled his father-in-law. But God not only accepted Jacob—He wrestled with him and blessed him!
2: So you’re calling me a crook?
4: You know what I mean, 2.
2: Just kidding. Still… it doesn’t compute.
5: That’s grace. If we could calculate it in advance, it wouldn’t be grace, would it?
1: God’s ways aren’t our ways. With God, we expect the unexpected—and we accept, without excuse.
2: But I had plans…
4: Sounds like God has new ones.
2: I had everything mapped out—what I wanted to do, where I’d go.
