By John Alexander
A poem I wrote for my mother's 95th birthday celebration.
Her long life speaks of a "well done, good and faithful servant" type of life.
My mother, whose life spanned almost all of the 20th century—just slightly missing both the 19th and 21st centuries—experienced the mind-blowing realities of, as a child, travelling to a new home in a railway cattle car, to, as a senior, travelling in a modern jet airplane.
Her life, as the "Butterfly Lady," made better people of the thousands of "ordinary" people she encountered without expectation of any notoriety nor reward.
Thanks Mom!

Sample of Script:
Written for my mother on her 95th birthday.
"God is a woman," the angry ones yell,
"A male gender deity's made our lives hell!
Too long we, inferior, of lesser worth!
It's time we establish our rank on this earth!"
"For centuries now we've been under the yoke,
As men have oppressed us, our life is a joke!
But now we will prove that this is our hour,
We'll seize control of establishment's power."
As I watch from my safe spot, my eyes fill with tears,
It's true, women's rights have been trod on for years.
We men feel self-righteous by mouthing the thought,
But gender equality's not women's lot.
A sweet flood of memories, such happy thoughts,
I recall the example my own parents taught.
I see my Mom working alongside my Dad,
It all seemed so natural to me as a lad. . .
It wouldn't seem right to my Mom in her prime
To be marching for rights she'd had all the time.
