JESSIE: Hey Tim, what’s up?

TIM: Nothin’ much, just hangin’ out here. What about you?

JESSIE: Actually, waiting for Bonnie. We’re gonna go to our How to Be a Great Ventriloquist class.

TIM: Ventriloquist? You’re puttin’ me on, right?

JESSIE: Nope. Bonnie and I are taking classes so we can become really good ventriloquists.

TIM: No way! You and Bonnie, ventriloquists? I’ve never even seen you talk without moving your lips.

JESSIE: Of course not! That’s why we’re taking classes.

(Bonnie enters.)

BONNIE: Hey all. You about ready to go to class, Jessie?

JESSIE: Yep, all ready! Just hangin’ with Tim while I was waiting for you.

BONNIE: So, have you practiced all the exercises from our last class?

JESSIE: Yeah, but it’s tough, seems like.

TIM: I just can’t get over this—you guys, ventriloquists! Sure was news to me! But hey, let’s see you do some of your ventriloquism.

(Jessie and Bonnie drop their lower jaws and stay motionless.)

TIM: Quit clownin’ around, you guys. I want to see you talk without moving your lips.

BONNIE: We haven’t taken that part yet. We’re concentrating on relaxing our jaw. See, like this.

(Jessie and Bonnie again drop their jaws and stay motionless.)

TIM: So what’s that got to do with being a ventriloquist?

JESSIE: Duh! The first thing you have to learn is jaw relaxation. That’s what we’ve been working on up until now. Our class today is about proper breath control.

TIM: Breath control? Jaw relaxation? I don’t get it. How can you guys be so excited about ventriloquism when you haven’t even once spent time in your classes learning how to talk without moving your lips? I mean, isn’t that what ventriloquism is all about?

BONNIE: Well, yes, of course it is, Tim. But in order to be a good ventriloquist, we need to know some of the background techniques. That’s where things like jaw relaxation and breath control come in.

JESSIE: It’s just like going to school. You don’t start in university, then go to kindergarten, then take high school.
