Jesus Calms the Storm
This is the first of five comedic superhero-themed sketches for Vacation Bible School, based on Jesus Calms the Storm (Matthew 8:23, Mark 4:35, Luke 8:22). The characters, Splash Man and Splash Girl—parodies of Batman and Batgirl—bring humor and adventure while reinforcing biblical lessons.
Setting:
The skit takes place at a swimming pool with a lifeguard station.
Main Characters:
- Splash Man – A self-proclaimed superhero, but afraid of heights and sneezes when he touches water.
- Splash Girl – His enthusiastic sidekick, eager to prove herself.
- Jennie & Peter – Local kids who engage with Splash Man and Splash Girl.
Plot:
Splash Man and Splash Girl arrive heroically at the pool, ready to "protect" it. However, it quickly becomes clear that Splash Man has serious limitations—he's afraid of heights, can't swim, and sneezes when wet. When Jennie and Peter suggest that he should be ready to jump off the lifeguard tower to save a drowning person, he hilariously insists on "saving" them by calling them to shore instead.
Eventually, Peter and Jennie realize that Splash Man's way of controlling the pool’s waves—by calling on "Gord" to turn off the wave machine—parallels the biblical story of Jesus calming the storm. They excitedly connect this to their Vacation Bible School lesson, reinforcing the message that true control over the waves comes from God.
Each segment is approximately 10 minutes, except for the final sketch #5, which is 20 minutes:

SGirl: Great surging tidal waves, Splash Man! I would for sure be proud to park the Splashmobile. . . Umm, do you think I could, like, like drive it rather than just push it, huh?
SMan: No, no, I really don’t think that would be wise, Splash Girl! . . You must remember that this is a highly engineered Splash Vehicle, capable of reaching blinding speeds.
SGirl: I understand, Splash Man. It’s just that I hope someday maybe . . .
SMan: Well, Splash Girl, you have to understand that I haven’t always been the impressive superhero that I am today. . . I dare say, your day will come, Splash Girl!
(Jennie and Peter come on stage.)
Jennie: Hey Splash Man, Splash Girl! It’s so nice to see you here at the Splash Pool. I am Jennie, and this here is Peter. Are you all ready to go to work, protecting our Splash Pool?
SMan: Well, Jennie, like my Momma always said, I was born for this moment.
SGirl: I thought your momma said that about your sister.
SMan: Sis and I looked a lot alike actually.
Peter: Splash Man, what do you say about the wonderful new lifeguard tower we built for you here at the Splash Pool?
SMan, frightened look: A tower . .? . . Like up, off the ground?
SGirl: Splash Man has issues with being more than two inches off the ground.
SMan, hurt: I have acrophobia, is all.
Jennie: Acrophobia?
SMan: Fear of heights.
SGirl: Great water wave parks, Splash Man! You had to go into counseling to handle wearing platform shoes to make you look taller!
SMan: Yeah, but who knew that the soles of those shoes were gonna be like four inches thick?
Peter: Well, I gotta tell you, Splash Man, our town will for sure sleep better knowing that you are looking out for the folks at Vacation Bible School when they are swimming in the Splash Pool here.
SMan, confidently: Well, it’s just what I do, Peter.
Jennie: Well, like Peter said, knowing that if something happens in the Splash Pool, you are ready to jump off the top of that lifeguard tower . .
SMan, worried, looks up at the top of the tower: Jump? . . . All the way off the top of . . that? . . .
Jennie: . . . and rush out into the water to save them . .
SMan, scared: In the water? . . You mean, you expect me to go out in the water?
Jennie: Well, how else would you do it? . . I mean, suppose I was out there in the water and I was drowning . . . what would you do?
SMan, confident: I, Splash Man, would call out to you . . in my deep, gorgeous voice . . . and I would say, "Hello there, you, flailing around in the water, come up here on the beach and I will save you!"
SGirl, proud: That’s how Splash Man operates! Isn’t it exciting?
Peter: Well, it might be exciting to you, Splash Girl, but I don’t think it is a good way to rescue swimmers in difficulty.
SMan: You mean that there is another way?
Peter: Yes, we would expect that Splash Man would go out in the water and rescue the person in trouble.
SGirl: Great water bubbles, Peter! Poor Splash Man would be helpless with all the sneezing and all.
