The sight of Jerusalem up ahead signaled the end of my long and tiring journey. But the thought of spending time with the disciples, and also with believers from near and far, wiped the tiredness and road pains away.
It was the time of the Feast of the Harvest, an important feast in the Jewish calendar, dating back to that time long ago when Yahweh God presented our father Moses with the Ten Commandments.

I and many of my friends and neighbors had come to attend Pentecost, the Feast of the Harvest in Jerusalem, just as had fellow believers from other regions and countries far and wide.
Our gathering in Jerusalem was really quite unique and amazing! Here were represented like minded believers from many countries, each speaking in their own native tongue yet bringing unified praise and worship to the one Holy God!
News travels slowly between Jerusalem and my home region. When we were met with the disciples and local believers we were brought up-to-date on recent happenings. And we could hardly believe our ears!
Most alarming was the announcement that our Teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, had been most cruelly arrested and tried on trumped up charges. This brought shock and deep grief.

But our reaction became utter revulsion with the news that he had been whipped and, in a most inhumane manner, nailed to a cross where he died, the subject of ridicule and persecution.
Then we heard the report that on the third day this same Jesus, the son of God, the Messiah, had, in some miraculous manner, escaped the grip of the grave and of death. And this, truthfully brought a moment of disbelief. The disbelief quickly was replaced with confident realization that this was the own and only son of God, able to do all that was within the boundless abilities of He who had created the universe.

After the resurrection the disciples had been in conversation with the risen Jesus and his instructions were crystal clear. Disciples and believers were charged with the duty of carrying the message of God’s love and salvation to all peoples throughout the world. The enormity of this job at hand would have, on it’s own, been sufficiently overwhelming . . . but to add to this, Jesus informed them he would not be with them to lead in the project. No, he was going to be leaving them, going to join his Heavenly Father.
No doubt the Teacher sensed the apprehension this news caused the disciples. So, to ease their troubled minds and to calm their fears he commanded them to do nothing, but rather to wait together in prayer, waiting for an enabling and protective touch from the Holy Spirit. This presence, this Holy Spirit, would remain with them forever, as a Comforter, protector and guide.
And so it was that we, believers from other lands, joined with the local disciples and believers to await . . . we were not exactly sure what. All we knew was that the Holy Spirit would . . . descend on us, . . . whatever that meant.
There have since been many accounts of what happened in that room that day. Mine is not an attempt to correct what others have reported, only to tell what my eyes saw and what my ears heard.
On that day we were, as per the directions of Jesus, gathered together in prayer.
All was quiet, our minds fixed on the amazing worldwide mission of bringing Jesus to all nations.
