When a group of teen campers learns about serving others, one camper, Sue, takes the lesson to heart—perhaps a little too enthusiastically! From polishing shoes and organizing socks to preparing surprise meals, Sue is determined to be the best steward ever. However, their counselor, Lori, gently reminds them that stewardship isn’t just about doing tasks—it’s also about prayer, obedience, and serving others with wisdom. This playful yet insightful drama encourages us to balance our desire to serve with understanding God’s full calling in our lives.

Slowing the Steward

Scene opens with all actors sitting in a semi-circle at center stage. Lori, the counselor, should be in the middle of the group.

Lori: So, that’s basically it, gang! That is what it means to be good stewards of God.

Tanya: I thought being a steward had something to do with airplanes.

Lori (smiling): No, Tanya. This is different.

Sue: So being a good steward is important, right?

Lori: Absolutely. God wants us to help and serve others in His name.

Alyssa: And we can be stewards every day?

Lori: Yep! You can find all kinds of areas in your day-to-day activities where you can be good stewards.

Megan: I know, I know! We can inform others when their shoes don’t match their earrings, right? That would be appreciated by many!

Lori: Well, I’m sure you can come up with things that may be a lot more helpful. That’s it for tonight, gals. Come on back to the cabin – we have an early morning tomorrow.

All the actors exit stage right except for Sue. Once all the other actors have left the stage, Sue moves to center stage and speaks to herself.

Sue: Being a good steward sounds really important to God. That’s it, then. I am going to be the best steward this camp has ever seen!

Sue exits stage right and the lights dim to show a time lapse. After a moment, the lights come back up and Megan and Alyssa enter stage right.

Alyssa (excited): This is great! Look at these shoes! I have never had my running shoes polished before! I can actually see my reflection in my Nike logo!

Megan (sarcastic): Yeah, super-de-duper.

Alyssa: What’s wrong? Didn’t your shoes get all nice and polished, too?

Megan: Yes, they were victims of the secret midnight polisher, but that really isn’t a good thing! My daddy paid big bucks to have these shoes made to look ‘broken in’ – that’s all the style, now!

Alyssa: Oh, well, I’m sure the phantom shiner didn’t know that. I’m going to go set out my other shoes in case he pays us another visit!

Alyssa exits stage right and Megan exits as she is speaking.

Megan: Well, I guess I could let him polish my new snake-skin shoes. I’ll set those out.

Megan exits stage right.

Lori and Tanya enter stage left.

Tanya: So, what did you want to talk to me about, Lori?

Lori: Well, Tanya. I just wanted to give you the opportunity in case you needed to tell me anything.

Tanya (thinking): Tell you? I don’t think I have anything to tell you.

Lori: You didn’t do me any special favors this morning?

Tanya (confused): Are you okay, Lori? Maybe there is something that you need to tell me!

Lori: It wasn’t you that alphabetized my socks by color?

Tanya: What? You mean to tell me there is someone going around organizing socks?

Lori (very confused): I guess so!
