Sin Fishing

Sometimes temptation looks too good to resist — just ask the fish! When Grampa takes young Mark fishing, they talk about how fish are drawn in by flashy lures and wiggling worms, even when they sense a hidden danger. Grampa uses this simple lesson to teach Mark (and the audience) about the way sin works in our lives — tempting us with what looks fun or harmless, while hiding the “hook” that can pull us in. Whether it’s lying, cheating, or dangerous habits, temptation can snag anyone — at any age. A light, warm, and meaningful skit that works well for all audiences.

(Grampa is on stage, fishing. After a few seconds, Mark comes on stage.)
Mark:
Hey Grampa.
Grampa:
Hey there Mark, good to see you!
Mark:
Whatcha doin’, Grampa?
Grampa:
Fishin’.
Mark:
Catchin’ fish, Grampa?
Grampa:
Well, seems I’m not catchin’ fish, seems like so far I am just fishin’ for fish.
(Grampa reels in the hook.)
Mark:
Wow, that there is for sure bright colors.
Grampa:
That there is the fly. It’s all bright colors so the fish will see it right away and be attracted to it.
(Mark points at the hook.)
Mark:
What’s that called, Grampa?
Grampa:
That there’s the hook, Mark. You need to be careful of that — it’s very sharp and you could get it stuck in your finger. Hurts a lot and hard to get out.
(Grampa puts the worm on the hook.)
Mark:
Ewwwww, that worm’s kinda yucky, wigglin’ and all!
Grampa:
Well, all that wigglin’ — it attracts the fish.
Mark:
And the bright-colored fly — what’s it for?
Grampa:
The color — it gets the fish’s attention, makes him swim closer. And when the fish gets closer, it can see the action of the worm — and now he’s really interested.
Mark:
But there’s a sharp hook there — doesn’t that scare the fish away?
Grampa:
Well Mark, fact is — if the fish looks close enough, he can see the hook. But the bright colors of the fly and the action of the worm are usually too much for the fish, and . . .
Mark:
And he opens his big mouth . . .
Grampa (giggles):
Yup — he opens his big mouth . . .
Mark:
And he is hooked.
