Lights up on empty stage. Actor stumbles on stage as if she has been pushed, looking back while speaking.
All right, all right! I’m going! You don’t have to push me out the door! (Looking at audience.) Sheesh! Some sister she is! (Sarcastic.) Another fascinating evening spent with my darling older sister and her family. Always a thrilling time!
(Dusts off her jacket a bit.)
I’m getting sick of this. She calls me and tells me to come over for the evening, you know, to see the kids, and then from the moment I walk in the door, it’s just non-stop nattering about how awful my life is! She keeps trying to “offer advice” as she puts it as to how I can improve my situation. Oh, yeah – she’s got all the lingo down pat. Her training as a psychiatrist sure gets annoying at times!
Anyway, my life isn’t all that bad. I mean, I’m no Martha Stewart, but I get by all right. Sure, I’ve made mistakes, but who hasn’t, right? We all go through a tough time. I know my tough time has lasted almost twenty years, but that shouldn’t matter! I’m still a good person!
(Frustrated.)
Who am I kidding? My sister’s right. No one sees me as being worth anything. I’m basically a joke to the family. No one cares about me or loves me - probably because I haven’t done anything.
(Thinking for a moment, then getting encouraged.)
That’s it! I just have to do something that everyone will be impressed with and then someone will see worth in me!
Now, what could I do? I really haven’t done too much over my lifetime, (pausing, then looking up at audience, trying to reassure them), well not yet anyway! I going to do something, all right. You just wait and see. It will be incredible! It’ll be sure to catch the attention of someone!
(Frustrated again.)
Forget it. I can’t think of anything! No wonder no one thinks I’m worthy of love!
(Looks down in despair. Kicks the “dirt” and finds a little piece of paper on the ground.)
What’s this?
Oh, someone must have dropped it on their way out of that church (pointing) across the street. What’s it say?
(Reading, slowly.)
‘We loved, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19.’ Huh. (Shrugging her shoulders.)
Must be some Bible quote or something. You know, all that God loves us stuff!
