Get ready to roll into a hilarious yet eye-opening adventure with our Missions Training© skit! Follow Joe, Frank, and Mary as they debate whether the “basics” are enough to become true experts. Joe thinks just knowing tires are round and black settles everything—until he’s thrown a curveball and realizes there’s a lot more to learn.

Through plenty of laughs (and a few cringe-worthy puns), this comedic sketch reminds us that superficial knowledge only takes us so far, whether we’re talking about tires or missions work. If you want to be truly prepared to share God’s word—near or far—you need more than just the basics!

Characters: 3

  • Joe
  • Frank
  • Mary

Run-Time: 3

Biblical Reference:  2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV) – “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Sample Script:

[Scene opens with Joe, Frank, and Mary standing in front of a closed door. Each is holding books and pens, as if preparing to enter a class.]

Joe (enthusiastically):
That’s right, that’s right. The courses offered here are second-to-none!

Frank (nodding in agreement):
I’ll say. You aren’t going to get very far without taking these courses.

Mary (excited):
I’m really excited! I’ve always wanted to know more, and here I am—Mary McKinley—soon to be a tire expert!

Frank (dramatic):
It brings shivers up and down every spine, Mary! Who knew there would be so much to know about tires? Good thing we have these courses to help us out.

Joe (checking his watch):
Oh, better hurry up! Looks like class may be starting soon.

Mary (with anticipation):
I want a front-row seat so I don’t miss a thing!

Joe (casually):
Okay, we’ll see you guys later!

[Joe starts to walk away. Mary and Frank look at each other, confused.]

Frank (calling after Joe):
Joe! Where are you going? The class is in here.

Joe (turning back):
Oh, I know! That’s where you two will be. Me—I gotta go!

Mary (puzzled):
Uh, Joe, I thought you were taking these courses too. Don’t you want to be a tire expert?

Joe (shrugging):
Well, the way I look at it is that the most important thing to know about tires is the basics, and those were all in the pamphlet when I first checked into these courses!

Frank (curious):
The basics?

Joe (matter-of-factly):
Sure! You know, like what shape is a tire?

[Mary and Frank exchange puzzled glances.]

Joe (smugly):
Round! A tire is round! And, uh, what color are most tires? Black! You know, the basics!

Mary (raising an eyebrow):
But, Joe, aren’t those kind of obvious basics? I mean, you don’t have to be a tire expert to know that tires are round and black!

Frank (concerned):
Yeah. Don’t you want to know more and become an actual expert?

Joe (with a shrug):
Why would I ever need to know more than the basics?
