This comedy has women in a gym discussing happiness, what causes or prevents it, understanding the joy that comes from a personal relationship with God.
Cast:
Matilda – the joyful Christian; middle aged.
Connie – middle aged; not really happy or positive about life, struggling day to day.
Barbara – middle aged; not really happy or positive about life, struggling day to day.
Connie and Barbara are in the gym locker room, trying to catch their breath after their aerobics class. All women are dressed in sweat suits and have a towel "hung" around their necks.
No specific sets needed, just two chairs put together for a "bench".
Barbara is sitting on the bench and Connie is standing just beside it.
Barbara and Connie are talking to each other but really aren't paying any attention t what the other has to say!
Barbara Now tell me, Connie, wasn't that the most brutal aerobics class we've had so far?
Connie I just can't figure it out, Barbara! I've been knocking myself out at this class for three weeks now and I haven't lost a pound!
Barbara I think that instructor has it out for me. I know she's 87 years old, but that doesn't mean that she can't have a torturing side!
Connie (distraught) Not one pound! Maybe I should look into that all liquid tofu diet. (thinking) No, that probably wouldn't work either!
Matilda "bounces" in, full of energy.
Matilda Hi gals! Wow, that was some class! No way you could get bored in there!
(Connie and Barbara look at Matilda in disgust. Matilda steps away to towel-off and Connie and Barbara talk to each other.)
Barbara Isn't she that (emphasizes) happy lady in our class?
Connie I think so. Although I've never seen her face before, she's always at the front of the class. I've only seen her perky little head.
Barbara (very serious, in a lower tone of voice) All I know is that kind of happiness just isn't normal. I've seen it before, and all that cheeriness is nothing but trouble!
Connie I suggest we steer clear of her!
Barbara and Connie continue toweling-off, fixing their hair, etc. while trying very hard to ignore Matilda. However, Matilda is trying very hard to strike up a conversation with the ladies.
Matilda So, like I was saying. That class sure is full of life, huh?! (No response from the other women.) Would either of you like a cup of coffee? I know we're supposed to stay away from caffeine, but if it weren't for us, Juan Valdez would be out of a job!
Barbara No, I . . . uh . . . we . . . that is, we can't! (turns away from Matilda, hoping she'll leave.)
Matilda You sure? We could walk to the coffee shop. It's a great way to break in new shoes. (Looks at Connie's shoes.) Why those shoes look brand new! How do you keep them from looking like you've hardly exercised in them at all?!
