Good morning boys and girls! My name is Joseph. No-o-o, not the Joseph with the coat of many colors -- the poor fella whose brothers sold into slavery that you studied about last summer. I am Joseph—the husband of Mary--the man chosen of God to be the earthly Father of Jesus. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE HONOR THAT GOD CHOSE ME!
But, what I came to share with you today is the story of how God sent an angel – yes, I know it sounds almost unbelievable – but it really happened! God sent an angel to bring to me a very important message. A message of His good plans for my life and the lives of all men to follow.
Well, let me begin my story by giving you a little background of the events that led up to my visitation by the angel sent from God. You see, Mary and I had known each other since we were children. And I always thought Mary was the most beautiful girl in the world. Not just because she was pretty to look at—oh she was that all right -- but, most of all she was so gentle and kind to everyone …she was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside!
As we grew up, I realized that I loved Mary very much and I really wanted her to be my wife! Before I go on with my story, I need to share with you a little about the customs of my people. You all probably know that we are Jewish people; as a matter of fact God’s chosen people. Well, in the days when Mary and I decided to marry the custom was that when you asked a girl to marry you, it was a promise – a pledge. Much more binding than an engagement as you do in your world today.
