This dramatic mime performance illustrates the contrast between spiritual blindness and salvation. It depicts a group of six people controlled by the Devil, symbolizing their enslavement to sin, until God intervenes to free them. As God removes their black sashes (blindfolds), representing spiritual darkness, they receive white sashes, signifying redemption and newfound faith. The Devil desperately tries to reclaim his followers, but they now recognize God as their true master. The performance ends with the Devil defeated and cowering at God’s feet, as a powerful voice-over scripture calls the audience into the light.
Estimated Run Time:
8-10 minutes (based on mime pacing, scripture reading, and movements).
Cast:
8 people plus a male voice over.
Costume:
- God – dressed in all white, (white long sleeved shirt, white pants, and a white sash tied around his forehead. He should wear a long, white overcoat with pockets, containing six white sashes.) He would always have a calm smile on his face, unless otherwise noted.
- Devil – dressed all in black, (black long sleeved shirt, black pants, and a black sash tied around his forehead). He would always have a smirk on his face.
-6 members of the “group” – all dressed in black long sleeved shirts and black pants. They also have black sashes, but they have them tied around their heads, pulled over their eyes so they cannot see. For safety matters, have them always with their heads downward so they can have their sashes slightly up enabling them to see the edge of the stage.
Biblical Reference:
1 Peter 2:9-11
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul."
Sample of script:
(The stage remains in complete darkness. A male voice-over calmly and smoothly reads the following scripture.)
VOICE OVER: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.
(Immediately after the voice-over is finished, lights come up on the stage, revealing the group. The six members stand completely still, side-by-side in a row, facing the audience. Their sashes cover their eyes.)
(The Devil enters from stage left.)
(As the group remains perfectly still, the Devil walks around, eyeing the members. He smiles cruelly at the audience and snickers to himself. Rubbing his hands together in excitement, he walks in front of the group, turns his back to the audience, and raises his arms straight up.)
(The group remains completely still until the Devil brings his hands together above his head and claps once. Immediately upon the clap, the group simultaneously drops to their knees.)
(All mime movements should be simultaneous and quick.)
(The Devil turns to the audience, smiling coyly. He turns back to the group and raises his arms above his head again.)
(This time, as the Devil claps once, the group remains on their knees and turns to their right. They place their right arm on the back of the person to their right and raise their left arm above their head with their hand in a fist. They freeze in this position, giving the impression that they are about to drive a dagger into someone else’s back. Again, the Devil turns to the audience, looking very satisfied with himself, and rubs his hands together.)
(The Devil raises his arms above his head. Before he claps, God enters from stage left. God should have a look of concern on his face. Unnoticed, He clutches His heart in anger at what is happening. When the Devil claps once, the group follows through with the imaginary dagger, driving it into the back of the person to their right. Simultaneously, they stand and bow their heads to the Devil. At the exact moment the group drives the daggers in, God clutches His shoulder with both hands, as if feeling the pain of those hurt.)
(As the group stands and faces the Devil, the Devil begins to walk around, impressed with his troops. As he approaches the left side of the stage, he notices God, who is looking at him with absolutely no expression. The Devil visibly becomes nervous but quickly remembers his troops. He points to the group, then to himself, indicating his ownership over them. God simply shakes His head at the Devil and points to the group, then to Himself.)
(Sarcastically, the Devil claps his hands once in defiance of God, and the group simultaneously kneels.)
