Have You Seen Him?

Jesus was seen by some people on Easter Sunday, while others did not recognize Him—even though He was all around.

This piece explores the reactions of different people through individual monologues:

  • Person 1seeking normalcy
  • Thomasdoubt and cynicism
  • Mary Magdaleneexuberance and anticipation
  • Person 2evaluating reality

Cast:

  • 4 actors (any age, male or female)
  • Mary Magdalene must be female

Costumes:

While traditional biblical costumes could be used, modern clothing is recommended.

Special Directions:

  • Person 1 enters unannounced from the back of the sanctuary and delivers their monologue. Upon finishing, they sit in a pre-arranged spot in the congregation and immediately blend in.
  • Thomas will then rise from within the congregation, speak while moving through the sanctuary, and then return to their seat.
  • The same process will follow for Mary Magdalene and Person 2.

Sample of Script

(Person 1 enters from the rear doors of the sanctuary, speaking immediately.)

Person 1:
"Have you seen Him?
Isn’t it so incredibly wonderful?
He is back!

Things are just as they used to be, we can forget all the sad experiences of the last few days.
Back to the way it should be, know what I mean? Everything smooth, just humming along. Like they say, no surprises. That’s my way.

I do have to tell you, for a bit there, I honestly thought maybe He was gone for good. Some of the guys—Andrew being one—were saying how He predicted this: going away, leaving us behind. I started to wonder there . . . maybe they were right.

Hey, look, that’s all behind us now, cause, don’t you see?
He . . . is . . . back!

No need to think about all those down things. Gotta tell ya, that’s just a-okay with me. Never was much for the long faces and doom and gloom—not me! Nope!

This . . . is . . . so . . . awesome!
He . . . is . . . here!

(Pauses, looks down at someone in the congregation, reacting as if responding to a question.)

Person 1:
"What do you mean, will He leave again?
What kind of a question is that?

Maybe you weren’t listening?
He . . . is . . . back!

So you think He’s going to come back only to leave again?
Like as if that’s going to happen!

(Pauses, looking down again, responding to another imagined question.)

What did I learn from all this?
Not much question on that one.

I learned that I just can’t operate on my own. I mean, when the source of your strength is gone, it’s like . . . gone!

But not to worry about that now.

So then, great!
He’s back!
And it’s business as usual, folks!

(Person 1 sits in the congregation. After a short pause, Thomas stands and immediately speaks.)

Thomas' Monologue

Thomas:
"Have I seen Him?
No, I have not!

Sure, some are saying He is back.
Wishful thinking.
Dreamers.

Some of the women—they come storming in here, jabbering—I couldn’t understand half of what they were saying.

‘Slow down there,’ I said.

‘Oh, Thomas, you won’t believe this, He is alive!

You are so right—I won’t believe it.

I, for one, was at the burial.
I was up close and personal with a very dead body.
No—He is dead, alright.

Look, don’t get me wrong—I want as much as the next guy to believe this story. I don’t go around doubting everything that comes along."

(Stops, frowns, looks down at someone in the congregation.)

Thomas:
"Well, I don’t!

First, I need proof, then I believe.
It’s just the way I am."

(Smiles, shakes head.)

"Sometimes I think it must be nice to be like some of the others
Hear something and just buy in, go along.

I can’t do that.
I have been burned too many times for that.

But listen—you give me the proof, I will likely be the biggest promoter, your strongest supporter.

But first—comes the proof.

Some see that as a wasted opportunity for celebration.
I see it as avoiding having egg on my face . . . and a black eye for our entire group.

And that’s how it stays for me until I look Him in the eye,
hold His hands in mine,
examine the horrific wounds I saw at the burial.

If it happens, it will be great.
But we can’t afford to be wrong.
Again.

(Thomas returns to their seat, blending back into the congregation.)

Next Steps in the Performance

  • Mary Magdalene will stand next and deliver her monologue with exuberance and anticipation.
  • Person 2 will follow with a reflection on evaluating reality.

Final Notes:

  • Actors must fully blend back into the congregation after their monologue, reinforcing the realism of the piece.
  • This script is powerful because it allows the audience to feel as though these characters are among them, just as Jesus was.
