Friendship, includes poem. This monologue deals with the attributes of a friend. A friend being a second self. What does it take to be a blessing to a friend?

Sample of script:

Wow, didn’t expect all you guys here! Who did I expect? Well I knew for sure that Jackie would be here. Jackie, she never missed anything in her life I don’t think. Well, maybe sometimes I guess. I sure could tell stories about Jackie. But just let me tell you that part of the stories are real and part I have made up. It’s up to you to figure out which is which. I am teasing. Jackie’s my friend.

Well, I knew that Betty would be here. That was always a fairly sure thing. “Oh, Betty will be there, for sure!” Sure helps the odds when I have two friends named Betty. So I can always count on my friend Betty!

And then there was Cheryl. The stories I could tell you about Cheryl, loves fun, loves to laugh. A very true friend!

I want to talk to you about friendship. The kind of friendship I have known with the two Betty’s, and Jackie and Cheryl. I mean, that friendship is like family. The Bible says a lot about friendship and families. Psalm 68:6 says, “God sets the lonely in families.” That’s how I feel about these four women who are my friends. I love them. Without them I would be . . .lonesome, you know?

Ever thought about what friendship means? What is a friend, after all? I looked it up, dictionary, whole nine yards, found some very interesting things; I would like to share some with you.

I like this one: A friend is a person whom one knows well, likes, and trusts. All these ladies, I know well, I like, but even more, I trust them. To me, that’s very important.

I read that a friend is someone to whom secrets are confided, a repository, a confessor. Do you have a friend like that? I have, all four of them.

Yes, and it says, a friend is characterized by kindness and warm, unaffected courtesy. That one stopped me for a while, but then I got to thinking about Betty, and how warm and kind and courteous she has always been. Yes, I have that kind of friend!

I ran across a description that said a friend is someone who exhibits accord in feeling or action, is harmonious, amicable. Betty, she is right in tune with the needs and thoughts of others, Betty is my friend.

How about this one? A friend is someone whose actions are in keeping with another one's needs or expectations. A friend to die for, right?

Another description was someone having good knowledge of you. See you can’t really be friends with a stranger. You’ve gotta know the person first. Up close and personal. And still like them. That’s friendship.
