Missions is compared to football in this comedy drama. The game for the Mission City Saints is far too important to lose.
Cast: 2 (likely male)
Set: desk or table and 2 chairs
Costumes: sports coach’s apparel
Props: football
Time: 5
Bible Reference: 1 Corinthians 9:16
Sample of script:
Coach is sitting at a desk throwing football from one hand to the other, Jones comes on stage
Jones: Hey Coach, you wanted to see me?
Coach: Yeh Jones, grab a seat. . . . Look, we gotta talk about the team, we need some changes.
Jones: Changes on the Mission City Saints? What kinda changes you got in mind Coach?
Coach: Well Jones, for starters, maybe going out and winning some football games might be good.
Jones: Don’t you worry Coach, the fellas are startin’ to jell.
Coach: Jell? . . From what I see the fellas are more fossilizing than jelling. . . Listen Jones, you’ve been my assistant for going on eight years and I like you, but for Pete’s sake the owners deserve a win now and then!
Jones: But the team is getting better every time out Coach.
Coach: I will give you that Jones, last Saturday’s game was our best this season. . . But losing 79 to 6 is still not a moral victory.
Jones: Well, maybe we try a few more trick plays like last game Coach? . . You have to admit that sure fooled the other team.
Coach: I don’t see punting on first down as that much of a good trick play Jones. . . See, what we need to strive for are first downs . . and I am not talking about our first touch on the football. . . We are talking moving the ball downfield in series of ten yards Jones, getting the job done.
Jones: I get it Coach, like the other teams do to us when they are on offence you mean? (thinks) You know, just might work. I just hope our guys are ready for this concept.
Coach: Way I see it Jones, two things we need . .. a game plan and a recruitment plan.
Jones: Sounds pretty advanced Coach, but I for sure am with you.
Coach: See Jones we are gonna be playing the New Age Devils football team.
Jones: Wow, I heard about them Coach, they are rough and mean.
Coach: Well I have to admit that the Devils coach, old Luke, he has done quite some job of recruiting, making promises to guys to get them on his team, teaching them all kinds of underhanded plays.
