3 actors, sitting separately, attending a funeral, soft organ music in background

As each actor will speak the other 2 will freeze, head down

1:  Flowers are nice, lilies, she loved lilies.
Soft music. She would have liked this.
The casket looks strong and sedate, just as she was.
She looks like she has just fallen asleep.
It’s as it should be for her.

2:   I’m gonna miss her. . . A lot.
She meant a lot to me.
I remember how she loved the old hymns!
(sings softly)
When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there!
(smiles, nods head)
Oh yes, she knew the old hymns!

3:    Funerals give me the creeps!
(looks around)
People sad, some crying, wiping their eyes.
(looks toward 2)
Except her . . . she looks happy, peaceful, even a smile.
What’s to smile about at a funeral?
I mean . .  the whole thing. . . Dying. . . Death! . . .
What’s to smile about?
Death is . . . death!

1:  Says in the bulletin . .  favorite Bible passage Jeremiah 29: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I remember that, used to read it a lot when I . . when I went to church a lot.
It’s been a while.
Life gets busy,  . . know what I mean?
But I for sure still remember that verse. . .

3:   I wonder how long this thing goes on?
(looks at 2)
I wish she would quit with the smiling!
It’s not respectful,  . .  know what I mean?
