Counting the cost of missions.
Not only does it take a great deal of money to send missionaries to needy countries, but it also takes its toll on people. Lives have been lost or changed all in the name of Christianity. The cost is high, but the rewards are out of this world.
Sample of script:
Son comes on stage from outside; Mom and Dad are on stage, coats on their arms, ready to leave the house.
Son: Hi Mom, hi Dad. Sorry I’m late for supper Mom, we had a project at University that ran longer than we expected.
Dad: Project? What was the project, Son?
Son: Actually it was really neat. Our prof got us started on this model, trying to determine the costs associated with the colonization of the United States. You know, it was really incredible, some of the answers some of my colleagues in my Accounting class came up with!
Dad: That really would be fascinating! You know Son, I’m really proud and impressed with how you have grabbed hold of your university studies. My Son, the C.A. I think you will enjoy work as a Chartered Accountant just as much as I have.
Mom, teasing: Poor child, never had a chance! You bought him a calculator for his first birthday!
Dad: Not true! Actually it was for his second birthday. But, seriously son, it will be good to have you in the firm, if you are sure that’s what you want.
Son: That will be great working with you in your office when I graduate. It’s a great opportunity for me.
Mom: If you two stop being accountants for a minute, please. Your Dad and I are going to church, I’ve left your supper in the oven, it’s hot dogs tonight, make sure you have some milk. Sorry we couldn’t wait for you.
Son: No problem. Church? It’s (day). What’s on at church tonight?
Dad: It’s the church Missions banquet tonight. (Name of missionary) from (country) is speaking. Should be very interesting.
Mom: I’m looking forward to it. Great things are happening in missions, but they come at great cost.
Son: That reminds me of our project at university today. My prof said that centuries ago a Christian missionary effort was a major thrust towards colonization, just as was the case in the early years of this country. And the missions emphasis at that time had a huge cost. We compared how in the last century or so there has been relatively little cost in missionary endeavours.
