Company's Coming

Company is coming, and suddenly everyone has something to do. Mom wants the house ready, Dad is thinking about time with an old friend, and Wendy has her own reason for wanting to look her best.

Company’s Coming takes that familiar excitement and turns it toward the heart of Advent. If we go to so much effort preparing for people we care about, what does it mean to prepare for Christ?

This simple Advent skit reminds us that Christmas is more than decorations, gifts, and traditions. We remember that Jesus came, and we hold onto His promise that He will come again. Based on Acts 1:11, Company’s Coming invites the church to consider what it means to prepare not only our homes for Christmas, but our hearts for Christ.

Mother is on stage, busily cleaning and straightening the living room. Father enters.

Father: Dear, I’m home. Where are you?

Mother: In here. I’m trying to get this living room cleaned up.

Father: What’s going on? You’re cleaning like company’s coming.

Mother: Company is coming! Rebecca is coming to visit!

Father: Rebecca? Your old friend from college?

Mother: Yes! And her husband is coming too.

Father: Mark is coming? Wow. I haven’t seen him in years!

Father suddenly looks around as though he has things to do as well.

Father: I should get my golf clubs out. Maybe clean them up a little. Mark and I could get out on the course, just like old times.

Wendy enters.

Wendy: Wait. Did I hear Rebecca and Mark are coming?

Mother: You did.

Wendy: Here? To our house?

Mother: That’s usually what “coming to visit” means.

Wendy: And is Fred coming too?

Mother smiles, realizing why Wendy is suddenly interested.

Mother: Yes. Fred is coming too.

Wendy: Fred is coming here?

Father: Suddenly everybody is excited about company.

Wendy: I have to get ready!

Mother: I thought you were already ready.

Wendy: Mom. Fred is coming.

Mother: Ah. Different kind of ready.

Wendy: Exactly! I need to figure out what I’m wearing. And my hair. Why didn’t you tell me sooner?

Mother: I just did.

Wendy: This is not enough notice!

Wendy hurries off.

Father: I suppose I’d better find those golf clubs.

Father starts to leave.

Mother: And I suppose neither one of you was planning to help me clean the house?

Father stops.

Father: I could do that first.

Mother: Good answer.

The actors freeze.

Narrator: Company’s coming.

Funny how those two words can change everything.
