Cast: BRYAN, JESUS
Props : Bench NOTE: Others can be used appropriate to the setting as desired
Setting: A park
Sample of script
BRYAN is seated on a bench with his elbows on his knees, and his chin resting in the palm of his hands. Lights come up. BRYAN takes in a long, deep breath and blows it out loudly. After a moment, JESUS enters and approaches the bench…
JESUS: Hey, Bryan! How are ya?
BRYAN sits up, looks at JESUS, looks away and then looks at JESUS again.
BRYAN: Do we…know each other?
JESUS: Oh, we’ve had a few discussions before. Mind if I sit down?
Brief pause.
BRYAN: Oh, sure.
BRYAN scoots over a bit towards stage left as JESUS sits on stage right side of the bench.
BRYAN: I'm sorry, but I just don't remember . . .
JESUS: That’s okay – don’t worry about it. (Pause) You looked kinda down a minute ago – wanna talk about it?
BRYAN: Nah. I don’t want to burden you with my problems.
JESUS: Hey, that’s why I stopped by.
BRYAN: Huh?
JESUS: You looked like you were carrying quite a load and I thought talking about it might take away some of your worry and stress.
BRYAN: Well…yeah, I guess it might.
(Pause) But you wouldn’t be interested…and, besides, there’s really nothing you can do to help.
JESUS: Sometimes just talking and having someone else listen helps a lot.
(Pause) And you never know what someone can do until you give them the chance.
BRYAN stands, puts hands in pockets and crosses to a downstage left. He lets out another heavy sigh.
BRYAN: over his shoulder towards JESUS You ever felt like you whole world is coming apart?
JESUS: Yeah…I sure have.
BRYAN: Well, mine started unraveling earlier this week.
BRYAN takes his hands out of pockets and begins to slowly stroll across the stage. As he’s speaking, he’ll make an arc passing just upstage of the bench and ending up in the downstage right corner.
BRYAN: It all started earlier this week when my teenage daughter told me she was pregnant. Her mother and I were extremely disappointed, but tried to remain supportive. At least she’s keeping the baby.
