ACTOR:
I can’t believe I did this.
What was I thinking?

Doing the 5 a.m. shopping with my sister on Black Friday.
Maybe it’s a good thing I don’t host Thanksgiving every year.

I was on a high because the day was going so well.
I just did not think when I said,
“Sure! I’ll go shopping with you!”

And out so early for what?
These few things?

Every year I tell myself:
“I’m going to get all my shopping done before Thanksgiving.
Avoid the crowds… the pushing… the shoving…
the ‘holiday cheer.’”

And every year — here I am.
Thanksgiving weekend… and no shopping has happened.

I guess because every year it gets harder and harder
to figure out what to get people.

And of course — it’s normally the mom’s job
to do all the gift shopping.

It was so much easier years ago.

When the kids were little, it was simple.
I bought outfits I liked — the ones I wanted to see them in.
And the toys?
They were the ones I wanted to play with.

Steve and I would just exchange little trinkets,
because we didn’t have much money.
And, as they say, “Christmas is for the children.”
(At least, that’s what everyone says.)

Now?
Now the kids are older — and it just keeps getting harder.

They don’t like anything I buy for clothes.
(They may actually like it,
but it’s definitely not cool to say so.)

And I refuse to pay $40 for a video game
they might play once or twice
before moving on to the next thing.

And us?
Our friends?
We just buy what we need during the year.
We don’t wait until Christmas
and hope someone else buys it for us.

And then there are the gifts you get from friends
just because they want to give you “something.”
You know what I mean...

How many times have you opened a gift
and thought,
“I have no idea what to do with this”?

And if the friend is watching you open it —
oh no.

“Wow... who would have thought of giving this? But you did... wow.”

And you just pray the kids don’t say something rude
right in front of them.
