A Clear & Compelling Call is a dynamic four-part drama series that invites your congregation to engage with God’s mission in every season of life. Each vignette—To Pray, To Celebrate, To Go, and To Give—stands on its own or flows seamlessly as a unified presentation. With everyday costumes, minimal props, and fluid staging, this skit series brings to life the journey from whispered prayer to joyful celebration, from heeding the call to go into the world to embracing the heart of generous giving.

Ideal for worship services, missions conferences, small groups or youth gatherings, A Clear & Compelling Call challenges participants to listen, respond, and step into God’s plan—all in under ten minutes per theme, with a cast of five actors and virtually no set-up. Stir hearts, inspire action, and spotlight the power of a faith that moves people to pray, celebrate, go, and give.

Note: In all skits ensure that actors leave stage area quickly upon completion of their parts.

Run-time: Approximately 30 minutes total (each of the four scenes runs about 7–8 minutes)

Cast: 5 actors (ideal for Beth, Larry, Ann, Phil, Harriet in “To Pray,” and a similar five-person ensemble in each subsequent scene)

Biblical Reference: Matthew 9:37–38 (“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. … Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.’”)

Characters:
Beth – in prayer throughout the skit
Larry
Ann
Phil
Harriet

Theme 1 - Sample of script

Theme One – To Pray
Scene opens. Beth is seated upstage right, hands clasped in prayer.

Beth: “Father, I pray that You will bless our missionaries as they spread Your word throughout the world. Give them strength and protection. Guide their efforts that they may truly make a difference in the lives of those with whom they labor.”

Beth remains kneeling in prayer. At downstage left, Larry, Ann, Phil, and Harriet enter quietly. They glance toward Beth; Larry raises a finger to his lips. They speak in hushed tones (“as though in whispers”) while Beth’s prayer continues between their lines.

Larry (whispering): Be quiet, guys—Beth is praying.

Ann (whispering): Praying? But it’s not time for bed, and it’s not even mealtime!

Larry (whispering): Who says you should only pray at certain times of the day?

Beth: “Thank You, Father, that our missionaries have sensed Your clear and compelling call to minister in the many areas throughout the world.”

Phil (whispering): Missionaries. You know, I’ve often wondered how anyone could make the decision to move halfway across the world to be a missionary.

Ann (whispering): Me too. Why would you leave your family and friends for such low salaries? I mean, I can understand working in developing countries if the pay is good. But as a missionary?

Phil (whispering): But for what? What good do they do? And even if they do, who really knows—or sees?

Beth: “Only You, Father, know of the wonders being done in the lives of countless thousands because of the selfless service of Your servants. We thank You for their faithfulness.”

Harriet (whispering): Faithfulness! Man, it must take a very special person to be a missionary!

Larry (whispering): I think it’s great that people give up their lives to go on missions. I’ve even thought of being a missionary myself. But how do you know if you’re truly called by God?

Beth: “I pray, Father, that You will bring workers to Your harvest, that You will provide a clear and compelling call to Your people, and that they will respond to that call. Let those who hear Your call prepare themselves for Your service.”

Ann (whispering): Preparing for His service… I’m just not sure I could do it. Do I even have any special gifts to offer?

Phil (whispering): Well, I know I’m not prepared to give up my good job here in (name of city) to go on missions. I can understand someone out of work going—but to give up everything?

Beth: “Father, You call Your best. Show them that You will provide for their needs. Help those whom You call to trust in the plan You have for their lives.”

Harriet (whispering): I find it really scary, but I can’t stop thinking about the people in Eastern Europe. You don’t suppose… you don’t think this is God’s call, do you?

Larry (whispering): How would you know if it was God’s call? It’s not like there would be fireworks.

Beth: “Guide those who seek Your will, Lord, as they search for answers. Lead them to prayer, since it is in prayer that Your will becomes known to man.”

Ann (whispering): Seems you’ve got your answer, Larry. Prayer—that’s how we know.

Phil (whispering): You mean, like right now?

Harriet (whispering): Let’s go back to my place to pray. I wanted to show you some information about Russia. There are real needs there.

All except Beth begin to exit downstage left.

Harriet (continuing, whispering): Wouldn’t it be great if we could all go—like a team?

Phil (whispering): Yeah. I suppose my boss would give me some time off. You know, missions might be interesting after all.

The other actors exit. Beth remains, kneeling.

Beth: “Thank You, Lord, that You answer prayer and provide workers for the harvest. Amen.”

Beth rises and exits upstage right.

--- End of Theme One ---

Theme Two – To Celebrate

Scene opens with Charlie, Janet, Norm, Ralph, and Amanda entering upstage right, waving banners and pom-poms as if fresh from a football game.

Charlie: Wasn’t that an awesome game?

Janet: Absolutely fantastic! Who said the Roughriders would lose to the Argonauts?

Norm: Wasn’t that some call by Austin on the last play? What a quarterback!

Amanda: I don’t know about you, but I’m frozen! Anyone for hot chocolate?

Ralph: Great idea, Amanda! Let’s celebrate the Roughriders’ win with hot chocolate!

Janet: Let me help you, Amanda.

They move to downstage left, set a kettle on a stove or table, and begin preparing hot chocolate as the celebration continues…
