Marie and Diane, both exhausted and frustrated, meet at center stage and commiserate about how drained they feel. As they talk, they marvel at Brenda, a woman they both admire for her patience, self-control, and generosity. They discuss how Brenda manages to handle her children calmly, engage with difficult people like Mrs. Gregor with kindness, and volunteer for overwhelming tasks like making 47 table centerpieces for the PTA. Marie and Diane express their amazement and frustration at their inability to match Brenda’s seemingly effortless grace, highlighting their desire to be better but feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands.

Marie and Diane enter from opposite sides of the stage, both obviously tired and frustrated. They meet at center stage and speak.
Marie, exhausted: Oh, hi, Diane.
Diane: Hi, Marie. Boy, you sound about the same way that I feel right now!
Marie: Really? I don’t think that’s possible, because I don’t think anyone could be as worn out as I am.
Diane: Worn out? We should start a club!
Marie: What, you too?
Diane: You bet! I have never felt so drained in all my life! I am trying my hardest to do everything right, but I just can’t seem to make things happen!
Marie: I know exactly what you mean! Just the other day I was talking to Brenda from around the corner, and I was thinking to myself, ‘Man, there’s a lady that seems to have it all together’!
Diane: Yes! I’ve been watching her too! What is it about her that gets others to notice that she’s different?
Marie: Have you seen her handle her kids? She has patience I’ve never seen before! While my kids would be climbing the walls, hers are actually listening to her!
Diane: Children actually listening to their mothers? A new phenomenon!
Marie: And what about Brenda’s self-control? Once— (leans in closer to Diane) —I was in the grocery store, and I heard all this commotion coming from the produce department. So, being the concerned citizen I am, I had to go look.
Diane: What did you see?
Marie: Well, there was Brenda, all by herself, wedged in between Mrs. Gregor and the cantaloupe!
Diane: Imagine that!
Marie: I know! If you get stopped by Mrs. Gregor, you know you’re trapped for at least 45 minutes!
Diane: Cantaloupe! At least if it were something like strawberries, it would be more bearable!
Marie, frustrated: Can we focus, please? Anyway, like I was saying, poor Brenda was cornered in by Mrs. Gregor, and it didn’t look like there was an end in sight.
Diane: Did you go over and save Brenda?
Marie: Of course not! What would I do a crazy thing like that for? I don’t want to be trapped there forever, either! This way at least one of us gets out!
Diane: What did Brenda do?
Marie: Well, this is the strange part—she actually seemed to enjoy speaking to Mrs. Gregor! Even with some of the ridiculous things that Mrs. Gregor said, Brenda showed such self-control and kept on listening, as if they were friends!
Diane: Amazing! I don’t know how she does it!
Marie: I’ve tried! I simply can’t do what she does!
Diane: Have you seen how generous she is? At the school last week, she was the only parent to volunteer to make all 47 table centers for the spring PTA meeting. Who in their right mind would actually volunteer to do something that crazy?
