Nehemiah rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem. To learn more about Nehemiah we offer an interactive children's activity involving the children in learning about the story of Nehemiah from Old Testament.
(Optional) Click here for another script featuring a Children's church appearance by Nehemiah.
Cast Number: 1+
Run-Time: 2-3 minutes - Runtime may vary depending on pacing, group size, and engagement.
Exercise: Rebuilding the Castle
Setup:
- Have the children sit in a circle with all of the blocks placed in the middle.
Instructions:
-
Set the Scene
- Explain to the children:
"I used to have a big, beautiful castle built here, but someone came along and didn’t like it very much, so they wrecked it! They bashed it down!" - (The leader should appear upset to engage the children.)
- Explain to the children:
-
Engage the Children
- Ask the children if they would be willing to help rebuild the castle.
- Encourage them to share their ideas on the best way to rebuild. (At this stage, only discuss their ideas—do not begin rebuilding yet.)
-
Introduce a New Challenge
-
Acknowledge their great ideas and then introduce a twist:
"Those are all wonderful ideas! But I’d like to try some different ways of rebuilding. Let’s see how each of you can help in a unique way!" -
Assign each child a specific building method:
- Child A: Aligns blocks in a straight row on the floor.
- Child B: Stacks blocks into one tall, straight tower.
- Child C: Arranges blocks to form the first letter of their name.
- Child D: Stacks blocks into a tower while keeping their eyes closed.
- Child E: Lays blocks in a line with their pointed ends touching.
- Child F: Builds two separate straight towers.
- (Continue assigning unique building methods for each child.)
-
- Begin the Activity
- Once every child has a specific task, have them start rebuilding the "castle" according to their assigned method.
