In The Bible

"In The Bible" is a lighthearted yet insightful play where a group of children discuss common phrases they believe are from the Bible, only to realize that some are myths. As they explore well-known sayings like “Cleanliness is next to godliness” and “Money is the root of all evil,” they learn the importance of actually reading the Bible to understand what it truly says. Through humorous misunderstandings and friendly banter, the play emphasizes the value of studying Scripture and not assuming popular sayings are biblical truths.

• Exodus 20:12 – "Honor your father and your mother."
• Deuteronomy 5:16 – A repeated command to honor parents.
• Matthew 19:19 – Jesus reiterates honoring parents.
• Matthew 6:22 – “The eye is the lamp of the body.”
• Isaiah 11:6 – “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb...”
• Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction...”

Sample of script:

Sarah:
So anyhow, my mom said I have to gotta clean my room after school.

Benjamin:
Awwww, you mean you can’t come out and play ball hockey on the street with the rest of us?

Sarah:
Naw, not this time.

Tanya:  Bummer!

Roger:
Well remember what it says in the Bible, “honour your mother and father.”

Sarah:
I guess . . but it sure would be easier to honour my mother and father if they let me go play ball hockey.

Melissa:
Well, you do need to keep your room clean, after all, like it says in the Bible, “cleanliness is next to godliness.”

Frank:
Actually that is a myth.

Tony (confused):
What’s a myth?

Ellen:
Frank has a lisp, s/he means it’s “a miss.”

Frank (annoyed):
I do not have a lisp Ellen Jackson! I said it is a myth and a myth means an allegory.

Josh:
My little sister had an allegory one time but my mom gave her some medicine and she got all better.

Martha:
A lot you guys know. . . A myth, sometimes called an allegory, means a story that a lot of people believe but isn’t always true.

Alex:
I am getting confused! . . So what you guys are saying is that the Bible isn’t true?

Frank (exasperated):
What I was saying . . . if you will just be quiet for a minute and stop all your silliness . . . “cleanliness is next to godliness” is not actually in the Bible . . people say that but actually nowhere in the Bible does it say that.

Jenna:
Likely that was lost after the King James version.

Dan:
If it’s not in the Bible does that mean we don’t have to keep our rooms clean?

(All are happy, high five with 13, chatter: “right on” “way to go 13” “now we will have lots of time for ball hockey.”)
