Hearing The Call
Hearing The Call
Couldn't load pickup availability
Conversations with God might not happen if we haven't made a habit of being in touch.
We have to very intentionally open lines of communication during the good times and not just emergency calls, so both speaking to Him and hearing from Him depend on us.
Hearing God speak to us can be a matter of having the right listening apparatus, properly set up, and can be destroyed by other high-priority calls jamming the lines, too much static, too much interference or a lack of understanding of how God calls us.

Phone Calls & Miscommunication
Sample of Script
(Larry is on stage, talking on his cell phone as Mary and Jennie enter.)
Larry:
". . . so Marge says to me, ‘Why would you do that when there are shoes on sale at, like, real cheap?’
Like, can you imagine anyone thinking that way?
I was just, like, I was—well, you can just imagine is what!"
Mary: (interrupting)
"Hey, Larry, how’s you?"
(Larry holds up a hand to Mary in a ‘give me a minute’ gesture.)
Larry:
"Listen Gloria, I like, gotta scat. Talk later, K? Bye for now."
(Hangs up phone)
"Hey Mary."
Mary:
"Sorry, didn’t mean to interfere with your phone call."
Larry:
"Hey, don’t like even mention it, Mary. That was, like, Gloria Radisson.
I say that, you automatically know that you, like, did me this humongous favor getting me out of talking to Gloria!"
Jennie:
"You don’t like talking on the phone to Gloria?"
Larry:
"Jennie, you know what Gloria’s like!"
Jennie:
"No, actually I don’t. I hardly know Gloria—seems like a nice enough person.
But she’s your best friend. Guess you would know whether she is good to talk to on the phone."
Larry:
"You talk to Gloria on the phone, better like get all set to get your ear talked off.
Like booorrriiiinnnnggg!"
Jennie:
"Well . . ."
Larry:
". . . and the other guy never gets a word in edgewise, you know what I mean?"
Jennie:
"I think I can see that happening."
(Fred enters, holding a cell phone. The phone can either ring or a sound effect can be played, or simply use dialogue to indicate the phone is ringing.)
Mary:
"Now that is a goofy ring for a telephone!
Is that your cell, Larry?"
Larry:
"Noooooo! I don’t go for weird rings.
I use, like, the Western Mongolia National Anthem for my ring."
Mary: (sarcastically)
"Western Mongolia National Anthem?
Yeah, likely everyone will have that ring on their phone . . . Not!"
(Jennie points to Fred, whose phone is still ringing.)
Jennie:
"No, see, it’s Fred’s phone ringing.
Are you gonna answer your phone, Fred?"
(Fred looks at his phone screen and then puts the phone away.)
Fred:
"It’s my Mom on the phone." (shrugs, ignores the call)
Mary: (shocked)
"You don’t want to talk to your Mom?"
(Fred looks at Mary, confused.)
Fred:
"Why would I not want to talk to my Mom?
I mean, like, she’s . . . my Mom!"
(Fred’s phone rings again. He looks at the screen, then puts it away again without answering.)
Fred:
"It’s Donnie Miller.
(Shrugs, changes the subject)
"So, anyhow, anything happening with you guys?"
(Jennie, looking at Fred, confused.)
Jennie:
"Uhh, well, no, not really too much.
I did have a call from my uncle in Pittsburgh."
(or substitute another city as appropriate)
Fred:
"Must be nice."
Jennie:
"Nice to be in Pittsburgh?"
Fred:
"You’ve got to be kidding!
You ever been in Pittsburgh?
No, I mean, must be nice when someone actually talks to you on the phone."
Mary:
"But you just had two calls in the last couple of minutes—from your Mom and from Billie."
Fred:
"Yeah, they called—but they didn’t, like, talk to me."
Mary: (frustrated)
"But you didn’t answer your phone!
How could they talk to you if you didn’t answer your phone?"
Fred:
"If they had wanted to talk to me that bad, seems like they could have talked."
Mary: (exasperated)
"I don’t believe you!
I mean, someone can call you, but you have to acknowledge that the call has come in and, like, answer the phone."
Larry:
"Do you like think that somehow the guy who calls will, like, know you know the call came in—
'cause they know that you know that they know . . . that you know."
Jennie:
"Larry is right, Fred.
In a roundabout, jumbled-up kind of way."
Mary: (stunned)
"Larry is?"
